Toddler Dies in Sad Tale of Everyday Poverty in Cambodia
Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: A tragic accident has killed a one-year-old boy in Sangkat Phsar Doeum Thkov, Khan Chamkarmon, Phnom Penh. The boy's parents are extremely poor; his father scavanges scrap for a living, while taking care of the baby and three other young children. The mother of the children is locked up in Prey Sar prison, and the rest of the family are living in a shack built over a sewer canal.
On the night of the accident, the father got up at 2am as usual, to go out on the streets looking for scrap metal and other items to sell. He left the four children asleep on their bed.
But when the father returned home later that morning, he was shocked to see that his youngest son was missing from the house. Then he realized that the infant had fallen through a hole in the wall into the black pool of water under the shack.
He raised the alarm and neighbors came running, but it was too late to save the child. When the authorities arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the little boy had died from drowning in the muck under the house.
RIP little boy.
