THE RESULTS OF OUR 3-YEAR RANDOMISED CONTROLLED TRIAL IN YOGYAKARTA PROVIDE COMPELLING GOLD STANDARD EVIDENCE FOR THE EFFICACY OF THE WOLBACHIA METHOD IN CONTROLLING DENGUE.
June 2021

In order to measure the efficacy of the Wolbachia method, WMP, in collaboration with partners the Tahija Foundation and Gadjah Mada University, conducted a Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial within a 26km2 area of Yogyakarta City, Indonesia.

The aim of the study was to determine whether deployment of Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes leads to a reduction in dengue incidence in Wolbachia-treated versus untreated areas. The study site was subdivided into 24 clusters, among which 12 were randomly selected to receive Wolbachia mosquito releases alongside routine dengue control measures alongside routine dengue control measures. The remaining 12 continued to receive routine dengue control measures.

Following the successful establishment of Wolbachia, consenting patients presenting with fever were enrolled at a network of primary care clinics across the study area over a period of 27 months, and were tested for dengue.

In June 2021, the New England Journal of Medicine published the peer reviewed results of the trial which show that Wolbachia deployments reduced dengue incidence by 77% and dengue hospitalisations by 86%.

The number of dengue cases in Cambodia is on the rise for the third year in a row.

Dengue fever cases surge in 2022
In the first five months of this year, Cambodia detected more than 1,100 cases of dengue fever, an increase of over 600 cases compared to the same period last year, including two deaths.

Dr Leang Rithea, Director of the National Dengue Fever Programme of the Ministry of Health, said yesterday that from January to May, there were 1,125 reported cases of dengue fever, including two fatalities.

This is an increase of 625 cases compared to the same period in 2021. Last year there were 500 cases, but no deaths.

These figures show that dengue outbreaks can occur at any time, which requires people to be vigilant and work together to clean their local environment, especially around homes, and remove any receptacles that can store water and may be contaminated with mosquito eggs, he said.

Doctors advise all people that suspect they have dengue fever symptoms, such as an increase in body temperature to 39 or 40 degrees Celsius, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle pain, joint pain, red spots on the skin or bleeding gums, to immediately go to the nearest public hospital for a checkup.

Ministry of Health raises dengue fever alert
The Ministry of Health on Friday raised the dengue fever alert as the number of cases for the disease has significantly risen this year.

According to the ministry’s statement yesterday, from January to May this year, there have been 1,354 cases of dengue fever including three deaths, an increase of 100% compared to the same period last year.

The early arrival of the wet season, more construction sites and a burgeoning population are behind the increase in dengue cases, the statement noted.

The ministry has appealed to people to prevent the spread of the disease by removing and destroying receptacles that store water, including cans, coconut shells and old tyres, and used by mosquitoes to lay eggs, and send children to hospital if they exhibit symptoms of dengue fever such as a high fever.

Take precautions against dengue (and malaria) - empty any stagnant water around your house, fix all holes in mosquito doors and window screens, cover up your skin in mosquito-prone areas, and use mosquito repellent, coils, and mosquito nets in the evenings. Cambodia News, (Kampong Chhnang Province): Dr. Sok Kong, Deputy Director of Kampong Chhnang Provincial Referral Hospital and Director of Pediatrics Building, said on July 6, 2022, that according to the summary report from the Kampong Chhnang Provincial Referral Hospital, since April, the pediatric ward has been treating 63 children with dengue fever. 60 of whom were treated and returned home, and three were taken to a Phnom Penh hospital with serious symptoms.

Parents in the provinces are advised that they should take their children to a hospital or a local health center if they have a high fever lasting for 2-3 days. The health team can treat the patient, or judge if the case is urgent and needs to be sent to Phnom Penh for further treatment. The urgent cases are usually caused by people waiting too long before seeking medical advice.

UPDATE 2023

Warnings issued as dengue fever cases this year triple
Long Kimmarita | Publication date 08 February 2023 | 20:41 ICT

Leang Rithea, director of the Ministry of Health’s National Dengue Control Programme (NDCP), said that from January 1 to February 7, more than 400 cases of dengue fever were recorded in Cambodia.

Dengue fever is an infectious disease transmitted by two species of Aedes mosquitoes (Ae aegypti and Ae albopictus). There are four variants of dengue virus. Moderate dengue fever causes fever, a rash, muscle and joint pain, while severe cases can cause heavy bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure and even death.

“This year has seen more than triple the number recorded in the same period last year,” said Rithea.

He added that this number is likely to rise, as the community becomes less resistant to the virus. Last year, Cambodia reported a total of 12,500 cases. For 2023, the NDCP forecast 20,000 infections.

“One cycle of high rates of infection is repeated every four or five years. It is because the immunity of the community is reduced during this time span. Weakened herd immunity increases the risk, as the number of newborns and previously uninfected people rises. It is possible for the disease to occur four times in one person’s lifetime,” he said.

According to Rithea, cases are on the rise in Phnom Penh and the provinces of Pursat and Siem Reap.
