One country, one system? Hong Kong
With Coronavirus in the air. China have decided to take control of Hong Kong's security, thus practically ending the one country, two systems framework set out in 97
Chris Patten along with foreign politicians from 23 countries have signed the statement whichThe "draft decision" - as it is known before approval by China's National People's Congress - includes an article that says Hong Kong "must improve" national security.
It adds: "When needed, relevant national security organs of the Central People's Government will set up agencies in Hong Kong to fulfil relevant duties to safeguard national security in accordance with the law."
How to make friends...describes Beijing's plans as a "flagrant breach" of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, under which Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
"If the international community cannot trust Beijing to keep its word when it comes to Hong Kong, people will be reluctant to take its word on other matters," the signatories wrote.
They include 17 members of the US Congress, and 44 UK MPs.
The NPC is expected to vote on the draft law at the end of its annual session, on 28 May. It will then be forwarded to the NPC's Standing Committee, China's top legislature, which is expected to finalise and enact the law by the end of June.
Re: One country, one system?
Yep HK will be history.
Re: One country, one system?
The key reason people do business with China through Hong Kong is it gives them a lot of legal protections... feel like this will hurt the Chinese economy a lot.
Re: One country, one system?
Unless the world decides to stand up to the agressive rascist posturing murderous bully that is the CCP, and follows the lead of the USA in curbing this menace to world freedom.
With a united world, the USA would guarantee the sovereignty of HK and Taiwan, and dare them to do something about it. Unfortunately, China works hard, as part of their war against the west, to keep the world disunited by its media and social media shills and leftist/fascist fellow travelers so the unity will be lacking until the Churchills of life take over from the Chamberlins.
HK is the new Czechoslovakia. Appease, or stand up?

How do you cast allusions on Czechoslovakia/Nazi Germany straight after this?

Hong Kong was always screwed the moment the Brits honoured the 99 year lease & gave it back to China. It has taken a lot longer than I thought to come to the protests, etc. The time to make a stand & permanent claim to independence was 1997. Nobody had the guts then, they certainly don't now.

Back in 1984 when the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed the world was actively embracing China and people believed that the commitments made in 1984 would be honoured.Spigzy wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 9:55 am Hong Kong was always screwed the moment the Brits honoured the 99 year lease & gave it back to China. Particularly, the fact that Hong Kong's previous capitalist system and its way of life would remain unchanged for a period of 50 years until 2047. The Joint Declaration provided that these basic policies would be stipulated in the Hong Kong Basic Law and that the socialist system and socialist policies shall not be practised in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
Depending on the details, the new laws could mean the complete repudiation of the "one country, two systems" formula that the CCP committed to honor in its 1984 agreement with the United Kingdom. The net of all the new laws is that the CCP is ending any pretence of meeting its commitments under the agreement.
The reason why the protests didn't happen in 1984 or 1997 is that, quite simply, no-one expected the CCP to go back on its word. And now we have a whole generation of people who have grown up on stories and anecdotes of how life was like before the CCP took over and started reneging on the 1984 treaty.
The treaty is now part of international law, but the CCP considers itself superior to international law and not bound by it, although it demands that everyone else be bound by it. "Terrorism" is the catch-all phrase that dictators and war criminals use to justify mass arrests or mass slaughter. "Subversion" refers to any speech or act that the CCP feels threatens it. For example, even showing a Winnie the Pooh cartoon is considered subversive, since Xi Jinping looks like Winnie the Pooh.
The question is will the rest of the world sit by and allow it to happen.
And let's not forget the Taiwan issue that is simmering away in the background. Only recently, Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Keisuke Suzuki, said on Thursday Japan would not allow "people living in such a free society [as Taiwan] to be ravaged by the military power of a one-party dictatorship of the Communist Party," with the implication that Japan would militarily defend Taiwan from an invasion by China.
It would appear that Keisuke Suzuki is proposing to apply the "collective self-defense" clause added to its pacifist constitution to come to the aid of Taiwan.
Re: One country, one system?
The West will not do anything.
Look how quickly the myopic general public were to accept UNCONDITIONALLY the recent police state, in response to corona , all for the 'greater good' of course.
The young snowflake generation actually think they want an authoritarian state , just wait till their tinder and snapchat accounts get blocked, then what?

Lol. China pales in comparison to the USA. When it comes to matching the latter’s bullying experience, China has a lot of catching up to do.
Re: One country, one system?
the irony is that the governance in HK is far more democratic now than it ever was under us Brits. Pattern should keep his gob shut.
China is more advanced in many ways now than anywhere else in the world. My niece did a teaching stint in Shenzen recently and she reckoned when she went into HK it was like going back in time about 20 years. I think the thing about becoming part of China is vastly overplayed personally, and the sooner it's all done with the better.
My understanding is that what they are enacting now was supposed, according to the handover deal, to have been enacted years ago anyway but was deferred due to protests.
