To combat the virus by spending
To combat the virus by spending
just read bkk post article that says Thai govt has plan to borrow 1 TRILLION baht via 5 and 10 yr bond sales. 50 Billion thb have been sold so far.
rough metrics are that the 2019 Thai GDP was about 525 billion USD or about 16,716,000,000,000 THB (16.7 trillion). What 2020 gdp will be is anyones guess but easy to say it will be significantly less given that tourism is roughly 18% of gdp. Govt killed tourism. I'll be adventurous and add 2% to the tourism number so 20% blown away.
That would take 2020 gdp down to roughly 13.3 Trillion THB. I wouldn't be surprised at all if after 2020 wraps up the number was more like 10 trillion because a lot more than tourism was killed. So if/when govt borrows 1 trillion that would be aprox 10% of the economy. FYI 5yr bond coupon is said to be 2.4% and 10yr at 3%. And all that because 56 people have died and 99.994% of the country never even got the sniffles. This was not about health, it was and is about big money.
Anyone think the VAT may be going up a few percent in the future?

I think you may have to look at the bigger global picture to actually have a clue to be honest, ie over 5 million people infected and over 300000 people dead so far
Global tourism halted in its tracks, hundreds of thousands of business around the world closing & hundreds of millions of people losing their jobs
Its not just about apparently only "56" people dead in Thailand

The best way to get people and governments to spend money is to have a war with another country . Who is going to be the first ?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

I’m sorry. I just realized it was a Friday night and that’s a perfectly normal thing for Brits to say.

well seeing as I posted about Thailand, from Thailand as an expat, in the Thailand news and discussion forum Jay, what I said IS about Thailand borrowing 1 trillion baht for the sake of only 56 people dead and 99.94% totally unaffected, but I'm repeating myself.jaynewcastle wrote: ↑Sat May 23, 2020 2:59 am I think you may have to look at the bigger global picture to actually have a clue to be honest, ie over 5 million people infected and over 300000 people dead so far

If you wish to review the ussa and trillions of dollars being conjured up and spent vs 0.03% fatalities (of or WITH CV) and and only 0.5% infected... with half the deaths being very old people in nursing homes (which statistically have a 6 month expectancy after admittance to NH) many with one or more co-morbidities, and the US CDC document pushing docs/hospitals to check the "died of/with CV" box on death cert with the reward of 19 or 39 thousand dollars each death. And, the fact that the top 7 states ranked by CV deaths are heavily democratic/socialist/commie governed which account for 64% of CV deaths (it's a huge money grab). There's a lot more supporting evidence of this scam being run in the ussa, but I'm ranting already.
Point is, where's all this money going to come from??? It's not sitting in govt accounts just waiting to be spent, it's going to come from higher taxes and inflating the money supply, and selling bonds (which have significant interest coupons) that the taxpayers will have to pay for.

The Thai government caused this all?
OK, they closed the borders, and they're still doing so, but even if they would have stayed open would it really have changed the economics?
This crisis is a worldwide crisis, and there's nothing a small player like Thailand can do other than just go with the flow.
