Pfizer raises 2021 COVID-19 vaccine sales forecast to $45.7 billion

Pfizer has raised its full-year sales forecast for the COVID-19 vaccine it developed with Germany's BioNTech by 29 per cent to $US33.5 billion ($45.7 billion), as nations stock up on doses for the rest of the year.

Key points:
There's been general positive attitude towards Pfizer's vaccine during the pandemic
Their sales forecast is based on signed deals for 2.1 billion doses
Pfizer said it has shipped 1 billion doses since December
The company said it could apply for an emergency use authorisation for a potential booster dose as early as August, saying that a third shot will likely be needed to enhance protection amid a resurgence in infections in many countries.

The pharmaceutical company's coronavirus vaccine was authorised in the United States, Europe and other regions around the world in December of 2020.

It has since won new orders as rivals such as AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) faced manufacturing and safety hurdles around the world.

Pfizer also competes with US mRNA vaccine maker Moderna Inc, which has not been able to scale up production as quickly as its much larger rival.

"Worldwide demand for vaccines against the virus is expected to continue and the generally positive attitude towards Pfizer's vaccine … puts the company in a strong position to benefit going forward," analyst Samuel Indyk said.

The updated sales forecast is based on signed deals for 2.1 billion doses.

The forecast could be raised again if Pfizer signs additional contracts.

J&J last week estimated full-year COVID-19 vaccine sales of $US 2.5 billion ($3.4 billion), while Moderna has forecasted $US 19.2 billion ($26.1 billion).

Pfizer said it has shipped 1 billion doses of the vaccine since December.

The company has a production target of around 3 billion doses this year.

The production ramp-up is subject to expansion at current facilities, adding new suppliers and contract manufacturers, Pfizer said.

Pfizer records most of the combined sales from the vaccine and splits expenses and profit 50:50 with its German partner BioNTech.

Pfizer and BioNTech plan to test a version of the vaccine specifically designed to take on the fast-spreading Delta variant next month, with the first batch already manufactured, the company said.

The more transmissible variant now accounts for more than 80 per cent of new US COVID-19 cases and has also become dominant in many other countries including Australia.

Pfizer raised its estimates for overall full-year profit not just due to the COVID vaccine but also strong sales of blood thinner Eliquis, which it shares with Bristol Myers Squibb, and cancer drug Ibrance

From Pfizer to Moderna: who's making billions from Covid-19 vaccines?

The companies in line for the biggest gains – and the shareholders who have already made fortunes

The arrival of Covid-19 vaccines promises a return to more normal life – and has created a global market worth tens of billions of dollars in annual sales for some pharmaceutical companies.

Among the biggest winners will be Moderna and Pfizer – two very different US pharma firms which are both charging more than $30 per person for the protection of their two-dose vaccines. While Moderna was founded just 11 years ago, has never made a profit and employed just 830 staff pre-pandemic, Pfizer traces its roots back to 1849, made a net profit of $9.6bn last year and employs nearly 80,000 staff.

But other drugmakers, such as the British-Swedish AstraZeneca and the US pharma Johnson & Johnson, have pledged to provide their vaccines on a not-for-profit basis until the pandemic comes to an end.

Whether the market remains a money-spinner in the future depends on whether the vaccines become the type that need just a one-off shot – as for measles – or if regular vaccinations will be required, such as for flu. But in the immediate future, there are big financial returns up for grabs.

Here, we look at who is in line for the biggest gains – and which shareholders have already made fortunes.

1
Pfizer/BioNTech
mRNA vaccine
Pfizer’s Comirnaty vaccine, developed with Germany’s BioNTech, is based on re-engineered messenger RNA – the molecule that sends genetic instructions from DNA to a cell’s protein-making machinery. It was the first to be approved and has to be stored at ultra-low temperatures (-70C). Governments have ordered about 780m shots, including the US (200m doses for $3.9bn) and the EU commission (300m), while 40m doses will go to lower-income nations via the Covax facility. It costs $39 (£28) for two doses in the US and about $30 in the EU.

Expected sales in 2021: $15bn-$30bn
Pfizer, which splits costs and profit margins equally with BioNTech, expects $15bn in 2021 sales based on current deals. The final number could be twice as high, as Pfizer says it can potentially deliver 2bn doses this year. Barclays analyst Carter Gould is predicting sales of $21.5bn in 2021, $8.6bn next year and $1.95bn in 2023, on the assumption that the jab is given as a one-off shot.

Share price change over the past 12 months
Pfizer: +1.8%

BioNTech: +156%

The two founders of BioNTech, the husband and wife team Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci – both doctors – became multibillionaires last year, when the potential of the vaccine and the deal with Pfizer prompted the shares to surge.

2
Moderna
mRNA vaccine
The vaccine produced by the US biotech firm, based in Massachusetts, must be stored at freezer temperature (-20C). The UK has ordered 17m doses, the EU bought 310m with an option for a further 150m in 2022, while the US government ordered 300m shots. Japan purchased 50m shots. Moderna charges $30 for the required two shots in the US and $36 in the EU.

Expected sales in 2021: $18bn-$20bn
Moderna has said it expects 2021 sales of $18.4bn. Barclays analyst Gena Wang forecasts sales of $19.6bn, $12.2bn in 2022, and $11.4bn in 2023, assuming recurring vaccinations.

Share price change over past 12 months
+372%

A group of investors that backed the company when it was founded in 2010 will have made substantial returns. The chief executive, Stéphane Bancel, a 48-year-old French executive, owns 9% of the shares, now worth nearly $5bn.

AstraZeneca

The company has pledged to supply the vaccine on a not-for-profit basis during this pandemic, and charges $4.30 to $10 for two doses.

A freind of mine was turned down at the vaccination centre, while is Cambodian wife was vaccinated. But later he was offered the AstraZeneca at the price of $159 per shot.

Pfizer needs to be stored at -70c. I simply do not trust them not to cock it up.

Modena between -15c and -50c, but once thawed need refrigerating between 2 -8 degrees C. No refreezing once thawed.
Once out in the open it must not go over 25c, so not outdoor use, which is fine for a nice air conditioned private health centre.

Of the two new tech ones, Modena is doable here as long as it does not thaw while getting from plane to freezer.

Does anyone know of any private entities being sold vaccines by any of the manufacturers?

It seems it is all to governments and the WHO Covax programme. Their order books are full for the year and beyond and I can't see them selling a few thousand doses here and there to some crony pharma import company in a poor under developed country like Cambodia.

EXCLUSIVE AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine shipped to Canada, Mexico before adequate plant inspections
Allison MartellCarl O'donnellCassandra Garrison

5 minute read

July 29 (Reuters) - Canada and Mexico imported millions of doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine and offered them to the public without health officials properly inspecting the operations of the U.S. manufacturer, according to inspection records and the regulators involved.

The Baltimore plant belonging to Emergent BioSolutions Inc (EBS.N) was producing vaccines for both AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) under a $628 million U.S. government contract.

In late March, under pressure to help other nations access COVID-19 vaccines, the Biden administration released 1.5 million AstraZeneca doses to Canada, and 2.5 million to Mexico.

European regulators had certified Emergent's factory as complying with "good manufacturing practices," and on that basis both Canada and Mexico began using the vaccine, regulators in both countries told Reuters.

But the European Medicines Agency (EMA) told Reuters that the certification was based on a remote inspection that focused on a part of the facility that was not actually producing the AstraZeneca shots - a fact that has not been previously reported.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration halted production at the factory three weeks later, after J&J's vaccine was found to be contaminated with material used in the AstraZeneca shots.

FDA inspectors later documented unsanitary conditions and poorly-trained staff at the plant, which had been rapidly overhauled to make vaccines during the pandemic. read more Production had remained halted, with tens of millions of doses of both vaccines in regulatory limbo.

Emergent said on Thursday the FDA was allowing it to resume production of J&J doses at the Baltimore plant after completing additional regulatory reviews. read more

No reports of illness have been linked to vaccines manufactured by Emergent, and regulators have not alleged that contaminated vaccines were given to anyone. Emergent said there has been no evidence of contamination in the AstraZeneca shots produced at its site.

But details of the flawed approval process show blind spots that can develop when national regulators share responsibility for overseeing a complex global pharmaceutical industry. Those were only exacerbated given the urgency of the pandemic.

Moderna says its COVID-19 shot 93% effective six months after second dose
Michael Erman
4 minute read

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) said on Thursday its COVID-19 shot was about 93% effective through six months after the second dose, showing hardly any change from the 94% efficacy reported in its original clinical trial.

However, it said it still expects booster shots to be necessary ahead of the winter season as antibody levels are expected to wane. It and rival Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and BioNTech SE (22UAy.DE) have been advocating a third shot to maintain a high level of protection against COVID-19.

During a second-quarter earnings call, Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said that the company would not produce more than the 800 million to 1 billion doses of the vaccine that it has targeted this year.

"We are now capacity constrained for 2021, and we are not taking any more orders for 2021 delivery," he said.

Moderna shares fell 3.6% to around $403.87 in pre-market trading after closing at $419.05 on Wednesday.

The Moderna data compares favorably to that released by Pfizer and BioNTech last week in which they said their vaccine's efficacy waned around 6% every two months, declining to around 84% six months after the second shot.

With the newly arrived vaccines, Cambodia has now almost 21 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in stock through purchases and donations: 7.2 million doses of Sinopharm, 11.5 million doses of Sinovac, 1,071,000 doses of AstraZeneca, and 1,064,600 doses of Johnson & Johnson.
https://www.information.gov.kh/articles/51470

Hmm this must surely be the totals received to date and not "in stock"? Because that is way more than they need to complete vaccinating the entire over 12yo population.
