Chinese casinos spark viral uproar in Philippines

Chinese casinos spark viral uproar in Philippines

Post by phuketrichard »

I did not realize before that when He closed the online casinos in Cambodia ,China moved over to the Philippines.
seems the Chinese $$$ can buy anything ,anywhere...

MANILA – As Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte moves to gradually ease an economically devastating Covid-19 lockdown, a government decision to allow Chinese-run online casinos to resume their operations has sparked a political uproar.

Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators, or POGOs, are largely run by Chinese citizens and are under growing scrutiny for allegedly serving as havens of vice and crime. POGOs also pay big concession fees to the government and in recent years have helped to drive fast economic growth in the capital Manila.

....There are signs, however, that anti-Beijing sentiments are gaining greater political force. Dozens of legislators, including top Duterte supporters, last week channeled that public outrage to table a new bill which aims to ban POGOs outright on the grounds they represent a “social menace.”

Leading senators from across the political spectrum have criticized the Duterte administration’s seeming favoritism for the Chinese-run gambling sites, which some have perceived as a sop to Beijing.

Dubbed as the “Anti-POGO Act of 2020”, it also accuses the Chinese-run POGOS of making a “mockery of our anti-money laundering, immigration, and tax laws. It has been a source of untold criminal offences and heinous crimes related to the conduct of such operations.”

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

More evidence that the only ones who are defending the Chinese are those who directly benefit, financially, from their presence.

xi told all countries last October to close on line gambling...duterte did NOT listen to xi and left his lucrative on line chinese owned biz going.
It was not a case of moving...
So, the Philippine casinos did more business when the licenses in Cambodia expired December 31st...
The Luzon lockdown is in like day 60 and a typhoon is hitting it to compound the lives of the locals.
But, the payoffs and on line industry is going great guns..

I speak regularly with a few Philippinoes. Very ordinary everyday folk, in close contact with friends and family back home.
They are disgusted with the way DirtyHarry is sucking up to China - it seems a similar situation to here, with the leadership being right out of line with the thinking of the populous.

I think the mass murderer has taken his own calculated gamble defying Xie's wishes about online casinos - he figures he is a bit further removed than Cambodia, and has done so much more in acting according to China's wishes that he can get away with it.
The people are stirring tho' - especially upset by the effects that the Chinese gambling operations have bought.

A very interesting piece by "The National Interest" - an American conservative international affairs magazine published by the Center for the National Interest.
"How Duterte Turned the Philippines Into China's New Play Thing"
https://nationalinterest.org/feature/ho ... ing-125946

The really tragic part is Trumps "Oh OK, that will save us a heap of money" - rather than a quick, intelligent response which could have turned the whole picture around.
A classic example of why China is going to walk all over Asia and the Pacific totally unchallenged.
Unchallenged effectively and intelligently i mean - not loud mouthed boasting only.

That also makes me wonder how long we have in this country, before the Chinese use their influence to move us on.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

its a question of billions without food and water, education etc and people throwing money away, so about wasting, maybe a moral question

also, often the money used is stolen from taxes or dirty, a legal question

another thing, prostitution, drugs, exploited people, violence are almost always associated with it

Make it legal and tax it like any normal business. Problem solved.
