7-11 Coming Soon

Post by lostjeremy »

Are we going to look like Thailand with a 7-11 store every few meters?

30 year contract signed with CP today to.open stores in Cambodia and Laos but stores in Cambodia will open first. Don't see an exact date but it appears soon.

And they are much better because you can sit outside for a moment. Except for water, soda and beer there is really nothing I wanna buy at 7/11. Mostly junk in my opinion. Foodwise at least, tried an iced coffee the last time that was okay.

I first encountered 7/11 on 95th and Mission road in Overland Park Kansas in 1964...
The name said it All..
They opened at 7am and closed at 11pm.
This was a completely new business strategy and it found its niche.
A company called Quicktrip arrived in the 80s with 24 hour service and 7/11 began to mimic the same 24 hour service standard.
I was kind shocked in 2016 to see 3 7/11s within a block of each other in Bangkok near my hotel.
In PP I found a 24 hour Khmer mini mart a block from riverside that has served me well over the years for stocking up my hotel rooms.
I thought I saw a Circle K last year in PP which has been around in Cali and Arizona since the 70s.
The big deal with 7/11 was their icee frozen drink coke and cherry flavors....you filled the cup yourself and could mix the flavors...
The days of 9-5 and especially closed on Sunday were replaced with the new work ethic..
It was a smart idea...
Quicktrip came along and put gas pumps...
This is similar to the movie about McDonalds and how ray kroc stole some California dudes' burger concept and invented fast food.

There are hundreds of 24 hour convenience stores all over the place so no big change. The 7-11 stores in Thailand do have some good snacks though. They also have very reasonable prices compared to here, but I don't imagine this aspect will travel.
