I dont know about Hornets , but in NZ the European wasp were a real pest. They were usually called the Waikato Wasp which was because of the yellow and black stripes ,, similar to the jersey worn by a rugby team from the Waikato area.

They built their nest underground and was usually found by accident when you went too close to the nest. You could also find their nest by placing very small bits of meat on cotton wool which stuck to their legs, which they carried off to their nest, The cotton wool made them easier to spot as they flew in the direction of their nest.
Eradication was easy too. Once the nest was located you returned at night time when they were not flying , and you threw a sack soaked in diesel over the hole and then poured a gallon of petrol in. You did not light it on fire as it was the fumes that killed them.
A few days later you used a spade to enlarge the hole as you did not want cows standing on it as the nest underground could be almost as large as a cow.
