Nigerian-Cambodian Scammer Couple Arrested in Phnom Penh

Nigerian-Cambodian Scammer Couple Arrested in Phnom Penh
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): After receiving some complaints from people about online scamming, on April 30, 2020, the investigation and procedure officer of cybercrime department at National Phnom Penh police station collaborated with Stueng Meanchey police in the arrest of a Nigerian man, Longe Olaouwa Akindele, 30 years old, and his Cambodian wife, Nin Sreypov, 33 years old.
According to Lieutenant Siev Chan, deputy director of the cyber-crime department, the suspects were scamming unsuspecting people on social media. The used a fake identities to add friends and contact the victims. Once they were facebook friends with the victims, they pretended to send them various items, and told the victims to sent money for the deposit, which was between $500 up to thousands of dollars. After receiving the payment, the scammers stopped all contact with the victim.
The suspects have been scamming people online for two years already, fleecing about 20 victims, and they have received about 50,000 USD. Ten people worked with the suspect, and they were living overseas.
After the police raid, the suspects were arrested, some of their belonging were confiscated, and the house was closed up.
The police were preparing the case and they submitted it to the court in Phnom Penh on May 2, 2020. The police encourage anyone who has been scammed to file a complaint at their local police station.

UPDATE: With the permission of the Prosecutor's Office, the Joint Police Force searched the suspects' home and confiscated some more items. The authorities are presently looking for another man who was working with the two suspects. He is believed to be a Nigerian national living in Phnom Penh.
