Extinction watch: Giant Ibis - the national bird of Cambodia
Last Updated: Jun 29, 2020, 11.29 PM IST

Scientific classification: Thaumatibis gigantea
Image
Twice the size of the second largest species of ibis, the Giant Ibis measures up to 39 inches when standing. Listed on the ICUN Red List as critically endangered, the species went unrecorded for more than 50 years until it was rediscovered by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) researchers in 1993. Once found across much of mainland Southeast Asia, today an estimated population of fewer than 200 live mainly in the northern and eastern plains of Cambodia.

In 2005, the Giant Ibis was designated the national bird of Cambodia. Deforestation, climate change and poaching are blamed for the bird’s decline. In August 2017, 19 nests were found in Preah Vihear’s Kulen Promtep and Chhep wildlife sanctuaries, the natural habitat of many Giant Ibis. And in September of the same year, two pairs were found in Mondulkiri’s Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary. They were the first of the species to be found there in more than a decade.

Birdfair 2019 helps secure the future of Cambodia's 'Big Five'
Image
In a special online event hosted by the Birdfair team, Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and BirdLife International, it was revealed today that Birdfair 2019 raised a total of £155,000 for that year's conservation project, Cambodia's Big Five.

The money will go towards protecting Cambodia's Western Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary. The site is home to five Critically Endangered bird species: Giant and White-shouldered Ibises and White-rumped, Slender-billed and Red-headed Vultures. It is incredibly important to wildlife, holding 70% of Cambodia's vultures and 40% of the world's White-shouldered Ibises. It is also home to the Vulnerable Sun Bear and Endangered Eld's Deer.

But this hugely significant site is under threat from developments such as roads as well as hunting. The project will work to protect these species and the integrity of the sanctuary, as well as provide training and experience to early-career conservationists in Asia.

It was also revealed that the conservation project for 2020 and 2021 is Saving Helmeted Hornbill. This distinctive Critically Endangered species is under threat due to Asia's illegal bird trade.

Richard Grimmett, Director for Conservation at BirdLife, said that 62% of threatened birds in Asia are impacted by the illegal trade in birds, with some 265 species heading towards extinction. Helmeted Hornbill is particularly attractive for its unique casque, which is used in jewellery and ornaments. These casques can go for US$1,000 on the black market.

Money raised by Birdfair over the next two years will help protect the hornbill and its habitats, as well as raise awareness of the trade in birds and finance a review into the practice to help inform global policy.

Vulture extinction in Cambodia imminent

Cambodia marks today the 2020 International Vulture Awareness Day with the message that vultures need all our help if they are to survive in the country.

“Vultures play an important role in maintaining the environment by stripping the carcasses of dead animals, which helps to reduce the spread of disease.

They are nature’s ‘clean-up crew’. But it is this that puts them in danger. Illegal use of carbofuran-based poisons can exterminate vulture populations.

These dangerous chemicals should be restricted as they are dangerous to human health too. As a result, all three resident species of vulture in the dry forest landscape of the country are threatened with extinction,” underlined a joint press release Sunday.

“Cambodia represents the last hope for these species in the region, but the numbers have halved over the past ten years. Just one significant population remains, straddling the Mekong in Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary in Stung Treng province and Chhep Wildlife Sanctuary in PreahVihear province,” it added.

WHISTLING DUCKS RELEASED IN BANTEAY SREI LAKE
Image

Cambodia News, Siem Reap: Siem Reap Provincial Forestry Administration officials released 382 lesser whistling ducks in a lake in Banteay Srei on Sunday morning, 27 September 2020, after they were confiscated from two animal traffickers.

Prasat Bakong district police chief Lim Sambath told the Phnom Penh Post that his forces arrested two men after police checked their car and found 553 lesser whistling ducks, 171 of which had died. The remainder of the ducks were released into the lake.

“The two men are charged with illegally transporting wildlife, and the evidence has been sent to the Forestry Administration for further legal action,” Sambath said.

Good news!
Endangered White-winged Duckling Discovered in a Protected Area in Preah Vihear Province
AKP Phnom Penh, October 15, 2020 --
Image
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia released an image of an endangered white-winged duckling (Asacornis scutulata) the moment it left its nest in a tree cavity with its mother at its side.

According to a WCS' news release AKP received this afternoon, the duckling is believed to be one of five fledglings conservationists have been tracking in Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary of Preah Vihear province.

Khean and his team installed camera traps at the nest site to capture as much information as possible with little disturbance. These ducks prefer to nest in cavities of mature trees, unfortunately these same trees are highly sought after for the illegal timber trade.
Image
Situated at a height of four metres above the ground, camera trapping this nest was no easy feat. Regardless, Khean and his dedicated team of Community Biodiversity Researchers were able to deploy two camera traps, and the results were astounding.

White-winged ducks (Asacornis scutulata) are currently listed on the IUCN Red List as Globally Endangered with less than one thousand individuals remaining in the wild, mostly in India and Myanmar.

“This is such an important species, the habitats in which they are found are unique and must be preserved in order to protect this, and a myriad other species. The results of this monitoring are extremely encouraging and show that with community involvement and strong partnership between all stakeholders conservation efforts can be successful,” Mr. Simon Mahood, Senior Technical Advisor for WCS said.

WCS, in collaboration with the Provincial Department of Environment and other partners, have been working with local people in this area to provide long-term protection for this important species for the past decade – a partnership that has yielded many interesting results.

In December 2015, villagers who were by then well-informed of the status and importance of the white-winged duck, intervened to rescue a female in moult. During the period of moulting the ducks are naturally unable to fly, making them extremely vulnerable to predators. After a short time in care at the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB), the duck was successfully released back to the site.

Two years later in 2017, villagers reported a nest sighting and WCS Nest Protectors were immediately posted at the location. The Nest Protection Scheme is just one of the Payment for Ecosystem Services used by conservationists to provide alternative sources of income to those living in or close to protected areas. Local villagers were employed to safeguard the nest site resulting in a successful fledging of nine White-winged Ducks. The ring on its leg confirmed that this was the duck that had been rehabilitated in ACCB. In December 2019, villagers once again contacted WCS reporting that the same female had once again been rescued during her annual moult. Whilst it is not ideal to have captured the duck, the proximity to local villages and farmland meant there was a high likelihood she would have been killed by domestic dogs.

“We were excited when the news came in that the nest was once again occupied by a White-winged Duck, when we discovered it was a new female, we were very pleased,” said Mr. Mao Khean, WCS Biodiversity Team Leader.

Excellent news!! (although still a very perilous situation for this highly endangered species)
One of the Holy Grails, and breeding.

Historically, and even a few fairly recently, they are also known inhabit in Koh Kong - in both the Cardamoms, and in the new Chinese colony at Botum Sakor.

Good news!

More than 2,000 stork nests found in Boeung Prek Lpou area, Takeo province
October 25, 2020 11:03 Seng Sothea
Image
Cambodia News, (Takeo Province): Boeung Prek Lpou is a large wetland located in the Lower Mekong Delta and designated as a protected area. Boeung Prek Lpou, through Sub-Decree No. 90, dated August 9, 2016, which is geographically located at Borey Chulsar and Koh Andet districts, Takeo province.

This wetland is important for supporting the supply and habitat of birds, plants, fish and other wildlife, including animals and plants. Some have not been recorded in detail yet.

BirdLife, in collaboration with relevant authorities, has been supporting the Biodiversity Monitoring of Boeung Prek Lpou since 2003. The reserve supports about 30% of the Asian Openbill storks in Cambodia, along with about 129 other species of birds and provides for ecological services (fish) and provides agricultural water to people living around there.
The number of nests has been increasing significantly from year to year since 2003 and, according to rangers and biodiversity officials, their numbers continue to increase and now there are at least 2,186 nests. Previously, the birds came to feed but did not nest. The nesting is a new record that has not been seen in more than 15 years.

Mr. Lim Vat, Deputy Director of Boeung Prek Lpou Landscape Protection Area, said: “During the years that the Ministry of Environment has controlled this area, the number of wild birds is increasing steadily. For example, the presence of openbill stork eggs, which were discovered for the first time recently. This data clearly confirms the positive results of our team's past efforts to protect and conserve biodiversity resources in this wetland. As Deputy Director of Protected Areas, I am committed to continuing to lead rangers in the protection and conservation of natural resources in the area. This will be left to pass on to the next generation.
