After watching the (NOT Michael Moore!!!) documentary, written, directed and produced by Jeff Gibbs: I can think of only one appropriate phrase, dredged up from the atomic age: mutually assured destruction in a world of unfettered "growth."

Hundreds of millions of Asians want to buy buy buy and consume. The Chinese will supply it, while gradually destroying their own country, and the rest of Asia will consume their own lands, resources and people to have it. A kind of Consumapocalypse.

Meanwhile, North Americans will continue to consume and China will supply it. It almost seems like China is bent on giving the world everything it wants, particularly to Americans whose consumables spill out of the windows and doors of their homes and ultimately drown them as they eat their double pizzas and Krispy Kreme donuts until diabetes, heart disease or liver failure take them away.

Canadian military and security columnist, Gwynne Dyer, PhD in military and Middle Eastern history at King's College, London, lecturer at Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, was interviewed in NZ for his book Climate Wars.
What he found was the temperature of the planet is rising, with dire consequences for food production and economies.

Carbon emissions are to blame, but the rapid expansion of Southeast Asian countries is fuelling the problem. "It's their turn (to grow) and you can't tell them, `You can't do it', but if they do it, we're screwed," says Dyer.

--from www.stuff.co.nz, January, 2009.

11 years later: Every day, from my 7th floor apartment overlooking the Phra Khanong canal, I see flotillas of garbage flowing down to the Chao Phraya River. Plastic bags and other discards pitched directly into the waters, oily slicks bubbling up to the surface, and huge white detergent flows and a lot of other crap.

Which is a long about of saying, we're fucked because we can't stop consuming our way to self-destruction. It's a view shared by many friends and acquaintances, without qualification.

Sorry about the sunshine.

Reaction from "some" climate experts non of whom the guardian name. The negative reaction to the film is by those people who would like us to carry on as normal but use an electric car to ferry our bottles to the bottle bank. They are not much different to climate deniers "don't rock the boat".
Alternative energy sources cannot keep pace with the numbers of people in China, India, Brazil, Africa etc who want the life that the average westerner has, they want all the things we have, houses, cars, air travel, cheap clothes, cheap food, useless trinkets.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

"Let’s say you want to make a documentary about a complex and important topic. You could spend a lot of time on research—developing a complete picture of things, identifying scientists to interview, and figuring out how to give viewers the context necessary to understand the most nuanced issues. Or, you could just go point your camera at stuff until you have an hour and 40 minutes of footage, lay down a voiceover, upload that baby to YouTube, and call it a day.

Planet of the Humans, a documentary made by Jeff Gibbs and Michael Moore, falls into the latter category."

The guy who wrote this works for a non profit that fact checks the media on climate change.

Loose Change ( the conspiro-documentary about 9/11) is provocative and compelling viewing as well, it's also demonstrably false.

Totally agree with Clemens two posts above.
This film is cheapscape garbage.
I always knew MM was an artless propagandist even when i agreed with his basic propositions.
- amazing to see all those who detested his previous work suddenly rushing to give him so much credibility.
That has about as much intellectual integrity as any MM film - ie, very little.

You don't need lies to totally misrepresent a situation.
Ask Michael Moore's new breed of avid supporters who will tell he has done this in every one of his films before.
