US-China tensions in South China Sea fuelled by increase in military operations

The United States has ramped up its military operations in waters close to China this year as the risk of confrontation between the two nations continues to grow.
So far this year, aircraft from the US armed forces have conducted 39 flights over the South China Sea, East China Sea, Yellow Sea and the Taiwan Strait – more than three times the number carried out in the equivalent period of 2019.
Two of the flights passed closed to Hong Kong, a rare move that indicated their proximity to mainland China.
Meanwhile, the US Navy conducted four freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea in the first four months of the year – compared with just eight for the whole of 2019 – with the latest on April 29, as guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill sailed through the Spratly Islands chain.
On Friday, the littoral combat ship USS Montgomery and cargo vessel USNS Cesar Chavez were also reported to be operating in the South China Sea.

Re: China lays ever larger claim to South China Sea
The scary part is that mainland China is firmly committed to the idea of total war. Everything is commanded by the government towards a goal. Forget the tinfoil hats conspiracies that westerners accuse their own governments of doing.
Fishing boats are ordered by the government into disputed waters to harass military ships of other nations. With the PLAN just waiting for an excuse to attack.
Rules are something to use against their enemies. Heck, the government even ordered overseas development companies to stop working and to go out and vacuum up all the PPE they could find and ship it back to China. Students studying abroad are pressured to steal secrets and bring them back.
The latest military twist is the hypersonic missile. It travels so fast that there is no conventional defense against it. As soon as it is seen on radar it has reached it’s target. The only way to stop them is to strike first, which increases the risk of a big war on all sides.
War is coming. I just hope not in my lifetime.

The scary part is that some people are hoping for a war. It's good for a ruined economy and would take minds off the current mis-managed health crisis. Outside enemies are always useful for politicians with domestic woes. If you don't have an enemy, then make one. If you do have one, then make them into a big and scary bogeyman.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 9:26 pm The scary part is that mainland China is firmly committed to the idea of total war. Exactly, that describes the Chinese to a tee. Very perceptive.Anchor Moy wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 9:43 pmThe scary part is that some people are hoping for a war. South Pacific not South China sea, but it seems they are gearing up for South Pacific dominance and perhaps setting up launching pads for a future invasion of Australia.
Re: China lays ever larger claim to South China Sea
they dont need to invade it the oz govt is selling whats left to them
why go to war when you have willing sellers?
Re: China lays ever larger claim to South China Sea
Australian raw iron ore sent to China only to have it returned to them in a weaponized form. Sounds tin hat but many soldiers wore tin hats in WW2.
