Business and pleasure trip

Post by Milkman »

(Hello I read threads on this forum for a couple of days, and would like to ask some stuffs. I just hope I didn't skipped any obligatory presentation part, if that so, I'm sorry :O )

I'll try to be short.
I would like to live my country to try to get a small business/income source. Where I live, you get a return on investment in about 5 to 8 years if you buy a small business as fast food store or anything. For me, it's very long. Plus I'm in Europe, with the crisis the rares small businesses that keep going good are for sell at diamond price. So get a big fat loan for about 8 years and stay in my country stressing everyday to work my ass off to pay bills.... just doesn't enjoy me that much. I like travel, change.. The plan would be to completely setup a business from scratch or to buy an existing one, run it a couple of years, get the money back, launch it on another project, while the setup business would eitherway sells for good value or just keep getting income. I would like to find a place where with a small loan I could really expand my possibilities, as for now they are really limited lol. I like bars, nightclubs, concert halls, (that's mainly for the example I like a lot of less costly things too lol) but try to get one of these in Europe would just be impossible. Oh of course why bother ? I'd like this idead place I'm talking about to be a cool one too, with good view and sun !! :D

For the return of investment, I heard rumours that in the philippinos, Laos, or Cambodia, you can get a return on investment about a year or two. And as it's an other market from others places in the world the economy works really well.
I don't know if any of this is true : i've never been to this part of the world yet. But except hearing rumours I would like to get an opinion from peoples who actually live there x).
Just to clarify I don't have anything against working my ass off. Just not too long at the same place, or i get bored. And most of all : not to ONLY pay the bills and get nothing at the end ! ;)

So to try to get precises questions I would say :
-Viewing my plan of life, would you say that Cambodia could be a destination to consider ?
-What about economy in Cambodia, or Asia more globally ? Would it we profitable for someone in my situation to try to setup something in asia region ?
-Did any of you actually followed some kind of a same pattern ?
-With something like 10k$ Would I be able to get something decent with employees and profits ?

You have 2 hours. :D :D

Oh and also... Thank you very much for you answers ! :good: :Rose:

LOL good luck with that
I don't know if any of this is true : i've never been to this part of the world yet
Come visit all three countries for 1-2 months each, (minimum) and than think about it for another 6 months.
-With something like 10k$ Would I be able to get something decent with employees and profits ?
A small cart selling tacos /hamburger or sell pies door to door like pie man did..
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Visit each country first. Then live at least a year in the country of your choice. If you have to borrow money to start a business over here, you are better off taking it to the casino. If, you have a specialized and marketable skill...you can do very well here. If not, you are much better to stay in your home country and earn money.

Phuketrichard >> The year or two seemed a bit to perfect to believe. What's more accurate ?
A small cart selling tacos /hamburger or sell pies door to door like pie man did..
Haha was funny  dont mess with me about that, I got a job on this kind of bikes. Guess from where it came :D It doesn't even cost that price with an employee in europe so I'd take this information for the joke only ?

I'm 25. I'm working since my 15 or so. I had time to think about some stuffs, I'm a big thinker, always rationalize, prepare, plan, guess. Thing is too much to think you don't act. There's downside to everything. You can whine or do. I whined a lot, since about 2 years I do.
If I start a business I'm gonna have some issues, worries and concerns, no matter what, I can't see the point of imagining them one year in advance without the business even running.

I'm not stupid I understand very well that your (nice) Point of getting into the country to know him before try to do anything in it, that's basics. The ticket cost about 600 bucks from what I saw maybe even a bit more. You'll understand that I don't know any khmer, nor any people been travelling to Cambodia, therefore, having informations on the real life of the country could be catched online. I wont go chase a rabbit if i want a bear.

Well, I'd say :
1 : If they didn't wanted to talk with people on forums they probably wouldn't be on it. *wink*
2 : I didn't ask for any secrets (But if you write me your credit card number I won't tell I swear)
3 : If they came here on the first place, some of them must have been warned by others guys. Like good fishing spots. that would just keep the chaîn :thumb:
4 : Of course they would want to share them with me and for an insane amount of reasons but the main being : "I'm just awesome". The real question is "Why wouldN'T they want to share them with me ?" :dm:

Any more infos ?

best tip:

Come and see for yourself after the COVID-19 mess is over. After you looked around and you still believe Cambodia is a good place to run a business meet people and ask around.

Giving generic tips about doing business in a country that person has never even visited isn’t very useful I’m afraid

@OP If I said to you that I've never been to Europe or France, and I don't speak French or understand the customs there or know anyone there, but I think I'll come to France and set up some kind of business, not sure what but something cool, what do you think of my plan ?
What would you reply ?

That would probably be my answer to you.
As others said, don't even think about it until you come and see for yourself.

Yes, I would say that is pretty normal with someone starting a new business venture.

You quote - For the return of investment, I heard rumours

Firstly in business don't listen to any rumours

So to try to get precise questions I would say :
-Viewing my plan of life, would you say that Cambodia could be a destination to consider ?

Why not, you seem a little put off where you are, wanting a change of life and work.

-What about economy in Cambodia, or Asia more globally ? Would it we profitable for someone in my situation to try to setup something in Asia region ?

Just now things are up in the air like most places. Profitable? It could be, mainly depends on your customer.

-Did any of you actually followed some kind of a same pattern ?

No! Well yes, I did the unthinkable and opened a bar for 3 years "good times".

-With something like 10k$ Would I be able to get something decent with employees and profits ?

Difficult answer, yes and no to everything, are you good at business, you may not get a good view (I am still looking) Profits possible, but with your little outlay profit will go to your staff. Put a "0" on your investment - $100k that's more like it, gives you a better chance and would help the growing Cambodian economy.

Only you know if you can make a go of it, and that goes for anywhere in the world, think about it.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

8 out of 10 businesses fail after 1 year of operation or sooner, 9th fails after 2 years, it’s a common knowledge. Why should Cambodia be different unless you are skilled to do something so unique that you have no competition.
