Still Digging Up UXOs in Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

It would be a large problem, the soldiers at the time buried the arms so the enemy didn't find them and use them against themselves, it would have been very unlikely the other side would be digging around looking for them, with the fear of Bobbie trap's. Also the problem now with the time being buried, such as the weapons becoming more unstable, and the rain's actually moving them around. When you think how many explosive device's have been laid and found on land, it's for sure the less detected are still going to be more of a challenge! The ones that are laid in the many water sources of the country.

Digger Hits MK82 Bomb !
Image
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On February 13, 2022, the driver of a marble excavator had a lucky escape after he accidentally cut through an MK82 bomb, which fortunately did not explode.

The CMAC (Cambodian Mine Action Centre) specialists were immediately contacted to safely dismantle the cut bomb and remove it from the site. The bomb was a faulty bomb that was dropped during the Cambodian civil war, which happened to land in a marble quarry.

Let's not get sidetracked thinking the American bombers were dropping bombs for fun, they were actually being fired at.

These were delivered by B-52s and F-4s. I'm not sure many were shot down over Cambodia, I don't believe the Khmer Rouge had anything that could hit a B-52 which cruised at a very high altitude. North Vietnamese forces could though. The American bombers were defending the Khmer Republic though and targeting PAVN/NLF and Khmer Rouge forces.
PNOMPENH, Cambodia, Dec. 16 (AP)—A United States Air Force fighter‐bomber crashed within sight of Pnompenh today while supporting Cambodian troops. Military sources said, that the plane had been hit by enemy ground fire.

The plane, an F‐4 Phantom, fell and burned 200 yards from Pochentong Airport after the two crewmen had bailed out.

Military sources in the Cambodian capital said that the plane was hit while on a bombing run near Phnom Beset; 14 miles to the northwest.

The pilots apparently tried to make an emergency landing at Pochentong, but aborted the effort at the last minute and parachuted to safety. Witnesses said that the plane was trailing smoke as it approached the airport.

United States officers in Saigon said that the pilots were picked up by a Cambodian helicopter and taken to the airfield, where they were transferred to a United States helicopter, which returned them to their base in Thailand.
