UK News, Updates and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

He refused to return to court to hear the victim impact statements from the numerous relatives who lost loved ones during the bombing. What a spineless piece of shit!!!
But they will be delivered to him in his cell if he requests them.

I would have them pasted on his cell walls with nothing else to read for the first 5 years or until he can recite them all verbatim.
It’s not how you spell can’t. The can’t can rot in hell mate. (For UT, this is a play on words. In case you miss this one too!!)

Be angry with your govt and write to your MP. There's not much that we can do for you here.
Write to your MP? That's gotta be a joke - achieves absolutely nothing and just plays into their hands.

Well, for me, I unfortunately have the reverse problem. I actually hava a bona fide Masters Degree from Harvard or Yale or somewhere like that, with straight A grades, in Advanced Political Science - now I have to mix it with the hoi polloi who've got bumped up grades. Can't even get a job at Greg's now...

And so it begins... Something like 8,000 tip-offs to HM Revenue & Customs about furloughed workers working. I foresee some fines and recovery of furlough payments in the future...

No lockdown, no masks, no hysteria... NO PROBLEM: Sweden didn't go into a corona coma - and it's living in glorious normality.

Now DOMINIC SANDBROOK asks: Is this proof we got it all terribly wrong?

Spoiler:
we did
This is another expose of what the Swedes did and how they have come out in the Covid-19 stakes.

What is interesting is that it is in the Daily Mail, one of the Tories biggest supporters. When they start throwing rocks at a Conservative government you know they are in big trouble.

It is well worth a read despite having to suffer the Daily Mails website which must be the worst of them all for constant flickering ads and pop up videos.

"A few days ago, I took a stroll to the shops. It was a glorious morning and the parks and cafés were full of families enjoying the sunshine.
Perhaps the shops were a little quieter than they would have been a year ago; but they were busy enough."

"The restaurants were preparing for lunch; the mood was relaxed and happy. And nobody — yes, nobody — was wearing a mask. That, of course, is the giveaway.I wasn’t in Britain but in Sweden, a nation which stood alone in Europe in refusing to institute lockdown."

And as I queued to buy my son an ice cream, I was struck by the contrast with the situation back home. Like most people, I never imagined that the lockdown would last so long, or that the consequences would be so calamitous."

Once the government starts to give away money, they will always be an endless queue of people with their hands out, many genuine but lots of fraud too. The speed at which they set up the scheme and the one size fits all approach was always going to leave it wide open to abuse. They might make a few scores but overall the government will just write it off as it will be too difficult and time consuming to recover.

Debt now over 100% of GDP.

Here's an interesting chart showing just how false the claim that the UK has been in austerity in the last 10 years. The word you are looking for is profligacy. Living beyond it's means for nearly 20 years*

There is zero chance of a balanced budget in the next 10 years unless we have an economic miracle. It's huge borrowing from now on until such time as the markets have us well and truly cornered at which point the rates will go up and the interest costs will be more than the NHS budget.
Then it will be decision time; healthcare or welfare, you can't have both.

that's right, and in the good ol days it was 'shop a benefit cheat helpline' or something, often targeted at UK expats living in Spain whilst on gov pension (hardly a crime really) - this is way worse! UK is going to become a big school where all the unpopular kids start stitching their classmates up to the teacher (then wonder why they get bullied)

They slapped him with a £10k fine!

If you thought Jezza was a hard left loon, meet his brother! He was even blocked from re-joining the Labour Party in 2017 despite his brother still being in charge. An interesting character though, he was the brains of the family obtaining a masters degree is Astrophysics. By comparison, Jezza flunked his A levels, which tells you all you need to know about high level British politics.
