I have always said that if this virus lays you on your back for 2 weeks of misery, but leaves the NHS out of things, the government will not give a shit about it, or you. The moment you start clogging up the NHS and dying, they get all upset and squeamish about it.

Now that we know that being vaccinated doesn't stop you getting infected, infection rates should be largely ignored. As long as the vaccine keeps you out of hospital 99.5% of the time and 95% of hospital admissions get to walk out of the place, the game will be up for Covid.

The government will happily tolerate 10,000 deaths a year to regain £400 Billion of lost GDP. (£40 Million per death)
And when it's relegated to just another seasonal "flu" where at-risk groups are routinely vaccinated and the general population just deals with it as they do every year what will they move onto??
It's going to be a hard sell and even the more pro-government types are going to question the validity of the arguments if all they can move onto is ".... COVID is causing a loss in workers hours.." or something like that.

Well, you won't catch the politicians calling it a seasonal flu, that would paint them as closet conspiracy theorists. The have to keep up the fear tactics.

As for loss of working hours, this is at crisis level now with the 'Pingdemic'. So many companies have lost huge numbers of staff because their app has pinged them and they now have to self-isolate. These even includes those who have a negative test and full vaccination. Many have switched the thing off.

Indeed, the recent decline in case numbers may be because people are now reluctant to get tested. They self employed want to work. Government workers must think all their Christmas' have come at once - it's your own personal lockdown, in high summer. More Pimms anyone?

On August 16th the rules change and the requirement to self isolate if you are fully vaxxed will disappear, but many in industry say they simply can't wait until then. Critical industries are in crisis. Supermarket shelves are thinning out and we all know what happens when food security is in question: punch-ups over loo roll!

"Today's figures do not of course include any impact of last Monday's end of restrictions. It will not be until about next Friday before the data includes the impact of this change."

Is that their get out clause?

Also, the Spanish and Netherlands examples are not of much use to the UK. We have a more advanced vaccination programme and we are lifting when more of the population are vaccinated. Having said that, the Netherlands got a huge spike but the death rate is flat. What more do they want?

I am one of those to have deleted that pesky app. It's use is fundamentally flawed in that you "check-in" to places, but you don't "check-out". So I have a pint at 1pm and stay in the pub for an hour, then leave. Some dude (or dudette) rocks up at 7pm for a few bevvys the same day, is positive and I get pinged to isolate. Screw that. I test every other day and I'm double-jabbed. Time to move on.

Edit to add: We have plenty of bog rolls...

Covid-19: Air travel takes off on busiest weekend since pandemic began
By Joseph Lee & Simon Browning
BBC News

Published1 day ago

Airlines and airports say they are having their busiest weekend since the pandemic began as schools close and the summer holidays begin for millions.

Heathrow Airport expects 60,000 passengers to depart daily, while Gatwick says it expects 250 flights a day - up from a low of just 15.

But the numbers are still far below pre-pandemic levels.

Spain is the top destination for UK travellers, followed by Greece.

After 18 months in which the travel industry has been devastated by the pandemic, companies including EasyJet, TUI and Jet2, as well as major airports, said they would have more passengers this weekend than at any time since the pandemic began.

Air travel companies said the decision to let fully vaccinated travellers visit amber list countries without quarantining on their return had encouraged people to consider more destinations.

Travellers at London Stansted Airport in Essex reported snaking queues at check-in and security - with one passenger telling the BBC they felt it was "chaos" with staff overwhelmed.

Camilla McMyn said some passengers were upset after missing flights due to the long queues. "I haven't been crammed up next to so many people for a long time," she added.

Some 1,330 flights were due at Stansted between Friday and Monday, up from 735 during the same weekend in 2020.

What I find truly shocking about this Rooney story is that £50 ($70) is described as a budget rate for a hotel.

Based on UK quality, £50 gets you 4 walls and glass in the windows, unless it’s in the sticks. He’s clearly a class act.

What was the blackmail element?

The fact he was with two blondes or that he was in a £50 a night shithole. When it comes to defamation, you need to have a reputation in the first place. Rooney has a terrible reputation already as a womanising granny shagger. He's hard to libel in this regard.**

I think it's the fact he was exposed in a cheapskate hotel room that caused most offence.

**Jeremy Clarkson, in his recent new show Clarkson's Farm named one of his rams Wayne Rooney and filmed it's huge bollocks. That's how much an open season it is now on Rooney.

Anyone who hasn't seen this show, take a look. The Guardian just can't make up their mind about it: In one review it gave it a 1 star rating an said: "Eight hours of a buffoon screwing things up for our supposed entertainment is bad enough, but it’s his total contempt for farming that makes this such a grim harvest" That was enough to get me watching it.
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi ... ides-again

In another it said, "It is, by some distance, the best thing Clarkson has done in 15 years." I bet nobody spoke to him in the Guardian office for weeks.
