Re: UK News, Updates and Discussion
Welcome to the UK.
If anyone has any ideas of why the UK is now the second home to the Indian variant, answers on a postcard to:
The Right Honourable
Boris Johnson MP

Re: UK News, Updates and Discussion
India and Pakistani travel agents are/ were doing return tickets for those flying to the UK that enable people to avoid the £1,750 quarantine in the UK and it"s cheaper. For £1,450 you can/could get a return to London with a 10 day stopover in Turkey. So you get 10 days in a nice hotel in Turkey before flying on to London.
This was in the news a couple of weeks ago so maybe they have shut it down, or maybe Turkey is now on the red list ?

Re: UK News, Updates and Discussion
Especially given the fact that we haven't been able to leave the country for a long time and still can't for a few more days.
At least now we know the drill.
1st report the current spike in cases (currently in Bolton with 162 cases per 100,000 with 467 new cases in the past week)
2nd do nothing and watch the case numbers grow
3rd still do nothing and watch it spread to surrounding areas
4th hold your horses, it's still to early to do anything. We need to wait until its taken hold in every town and city
5th wait a little longer yet just to make sure it really is everywhere
6th now we can talk about doing something about it
7th several weeks after talking about doing something, we will do something
8th talk about hindsight being great as if we didn't know what would happen before
This government is incapable of learning from the same mistakes it has made before each and every lockdown.

Yes, Turkey is now red listed. That's why they are moving some football game from Istanbul to Portugal or wherever.tightenupvolume1 wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 3:02 pm India and Pakistani travel agents are/ were doing return tickets for those flying to the UK that enable people to avoid the £1,750 quarantine in the UK and it"s cheaper. It's about time that the government learns that people cannot be trusted to quarantine at home. Everyone coming into the country should be forced into government quarantine hotels. It's beyond a joke now and the focus needs to be on protecting us, our jobs and our freedoms and way of life before it worries about upsetting the small numbers (by comparison to the whole populationof the country) who are entering Britain.

Re: UK News, Updates and Discussion
In the last couple of days before India was put on the red list hundreds flew in to London on shared private jets, thousands more came via other European countries. There were pictures and videos of huge lines of people from India crowded into customs. Boris should not have given warning it encouraged those who had enough money to fly here and wanted the ability to use the NHS in case of infection. Even the well off in India are having trouble getting a hospital bed. I have a friend in Goa a couple months ago he sort of joked that he might fly to the UK just in case he got the virus.

Re: UK News, Updates and Discussion
The South Asian immigrant community in the UK (especially those originally from Pakistan and Bangladesh) have been disproportionately "vaccine hesitant" and they also seem to be more keen to travel internationally (e.g. to Pakistan for weddings and funerals). Wider social concepts such as herd immunity and not travelling unless necessary do not seem to be given as much weight as they might. We don't know to what extent those who got back into the UK just before red listing of their departure countries were compliant with the self-regulatory "isolate at home" regime. And this culture is quite pervasive, as exampled by the presence of two senior NHS doctors in the BBC report (see post above) who were among the group of eight who were unhappy at being put into hotel quarantine in the UK on return from their trips.
These issues may need to be addressed post-Covid to see what part cultural beliefs played in the extending or reducing the deadly effects of the virus.

And leading up to that when the situation in India was already out of control we had 900 people a day arriving in Britain from India. How can those numbers just be people returning from visiting sick or dying relatives? While we haven't been able to leave the country it seems that every Tom, Dick and Harry can come in and is told to just stay at home for 10 days. Quite obviously that hasn't been happening.tightenupvolume1 wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 3:33 pm In the last couple of days before India was put on the red list hundreds flew in to London on shared private jets, thousands more came via other European countries.
