Labour says reports of up to 8,000 tourists arriving a day are 'staggering'
Party is demanding hotel quarantine system be tightened up to avoid new Covid variants coming to Britain
Aubrey Allegretti Political correspondent

Labour has said it is “completely outrageous” that up to 8,000 tourists may be arriving in Britain every day and demanded the government tighten up its hotel quarantine system to avoid new coronavirus variants being brought into the country.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, the shadow home secretary, said ministers were not doing enough to secure the borders after the Times
reported the statistic, as well as other figures including that as many as 90% of arrivals at Gatwick airport are tourists.

The government is under pressure to clarify whether the figures are correct.

Yvette Cooper, the Labour MP and chair of the Commons home affairs select committee, said the findings raised “serious concerns” and added that the Home Office “needs to urgently respond, explain and publish these figures”.

The immigration minister Kevin Foster said “we do not recognise these figures” and that “tough health measures” were in force even for those arriving in the UK “on a visitor visa for legitimate reasons”.

David Lammy, the shadow justice secretary, said it was “staggering” many tourists were still being allowed into the UK, despite most international travel outside the country being banned and the prospect of a ”traffic light” system to help it resume not coming into force for several months.

“I’m not one for ‘let’s close the borders’ but you can’t have a situation where later on today Boris Johnson is announcing a sort of red, amber, green system for those of us who are thinking about a summer holiday, and then we find out that the whole world and their aunt can come in, breeze into Britain,” he told LBC radio.

“Where is the hotel quarantine for these people? Nowhere. Where is [the home secretary] Priti Patel by the way? She’s so good at hiding from the media and not explaining this system.”

how is that possible when everyone travelling to the uk now has to quarantine for 10 days either at their home residence or at a specially set up hotel, everything has to be declared before flying to the UK including the booking of 2 covid tests ready for once arriving in the UK, even at PP airport check in they are checking this declaration form with a fine toothed comb

i saw a report that there are currently only 1500 people in quarantine hotels so done know where they are getting the 8000 tourists figure from
and the people quarantining at home get visits from the police to check that they are quarantining

There's an awful lot of chatter on the radio about a Covid Passport scheme. This is not for Air Travel, this is just for going to the pub, club, football match or the theatre.

The usual anti civil liberties arguments are being trotted out, plus the ludicrous claim, repeated endlessly by broadcasters, that such a scheme would be "discriminating and divisive". Of course it is, it is intended to be precisely that.

What's your thoughts on this subject? I am going home soon so am going to have to get jabbed and sign up for it, which I have absolutely no problem with.

A government-commissioned report in December examined how Covid certificates could be used to decide whether people should be allowed into sports events, pubs and other crowded spaces, months before ministers publicly confirmed the plan.

A document prepared for NHS test and trace and seen by the Guardian shows that the research also looked into whether certificates could be made a condition of entry for family events such as weddings or even small casual gatherings.

The report, dated 17 December, was prepared by staff working for Zühlke Engineering, a Swiss-based consultancy that has worked closely on the UK’s Covid contact-tracing app, and has a number of staff embedded within the test-and-trace team.

None of these protests are peaceful, I think the last one was the Save the Badgers campaign, but even that got nasty in places.

The majority of people who go are peaceful and restrained, but there is a rump of professional protesters at just about every event. They are drawn from the various groups who's rallies and protests always get extremely violent and they attach themselves to just about every cause. They are a state/police/society hating group that are well experienced in police procedures and the laws around public order offences and know how to game the system. The police know all about them, they see (and video) the same faces all the time.

These new laws (Police Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill) is a huge 300 page piece of legislation that just went through it's second reading and has yet to go through the Lords. It's a long way from settled law but the majority in the House of Commons (369/263) plus it being in the election manifesto, guarantees it will go through mostly intact. Maybe a tweak or two, but that's about all.

The new laws, amongst many other things, would change the rules on protests, and make it a criminal offence to, "intentionally or recklessly causing public nuisance". It also shifts the onus on the protester to disprove, and not the police to prove, that they failed to follow restrictions the protesters "ought" to have known about, even if they have not received a direct order from an officer..

If you are one of the regular rump of the trouble makers, they are coming for you. And about time too.

The latest UK Covid related news from John Campbell. Also from E. Europe and Australia.
One interesting data point from Australia where they do very effective track and tracing. The infections nearly always come from friends and family, rarely from others. Close contact is defined as 15 minutes talking with someone or 2 hours in the same indoor space as them. So, don't spend more than 2 hours in any one bar and you'll be OK, so long as you sit alone, or with non-infected people!
The UK is doing very well in bringing down numbers. May 17 will be the big test as inter-household mixing indoors becomes possible. The government is handling things well except for the fact they will spend £37bn over 2 years on personal testing.

Yesterday's update from John Campbell. UK gradually opening up. UK cases and deaths down. US cases up, deaths down. Brazil cases and deaths up.
Interesting comment on the Chinese vaccines near the end of the video. Said he had high hopes of them initially because they use tried and tested vaccination techniques. Presumably this means they do little harm.

We specifically got a mention as a country relying on almost entirely on Chinese Vaccine.

Add to this that everyone being vaccinated at the moment is having the first shot, and the efficacy of those first shots is negligible. It takes two shots and at least another two weeks after the second one to achieve a possible 50% efficacy. All those government workers who think they are in the clear are going to be in for a shock when they ignore social distancing and gather together. I wonder if many of them are actually paying attention to the numbers?
