Have you contacted your credit card company to let them know you've been left hanging, or are you just waiting on Emirates to do something?

Australians stranded in Cambodia may find a way home this week

Australians stranded in Cambodia may find that there is a strong possibility of boarding a flight out of Cambodia by this week.

There are an estimated 300 Australians in Cambodia who are reportedly desperate to get back home to Australia but have been stranded due to the scarcity of international flights due to bans and lockdowns in various countries.

Khmer Times has reliably learnt that the Australian Embassy has been working closely with an Asean country to arrange a flight which will be a slot on which that country’s airline normally flies to before the lock down and flights cancellations.

The flight is expected to take place by this week, probably this weekend as the two embassies and airline find a workable solution.

The costs for this flight is to be borne by the Australians themselves.

Peter Gillard, a 26-year-old pilot, says others in a Facebook group called ‘Aussies attempting to Leave Cambodia’ include a family of nine – with a child with autism who needs more medication – and a family travelling with elderly parents, according to SBS News.

However, Cambodian officials who had seen the SBS report have stated that they are concerned about the politicising of the proposed emergency as this draft law has not been endorsed by both legislative houses and the constitutional council.

“They are stranded, we understand that. We are not stopping them from flying out. If there is a flight, they can fly out. What happens when they reach another country and need to get on a transit flight is not our concern.

“However, please do not link the emergency law with human rights violations as this is calling the pot black when their own countries and many western countries, including the United States have invoked more draconian measures to combat the virus. Our law is a straight forward and there is no need to bring human rights issue and statements that it could obliterate human rights.

I have sent the cancellation message to Mastetcard and ordered them to cancel the transaction and refund.

That was three weeks ago.

So far I’ve received 0,00 back.

In my case it doesn’t really matter, it was just a holiday flight, but if it was an expensive flight for two across the globe.... and your funds are limited...

Under the current conditions you could do so via China, Korea and Japan. Might be different tomorrow. I wouldn’t spend any money unless the flight was checking in already.
