National APSARA Authority has discovered a wonderfully designed wooden structure aged nearly 1,000 years old and an artifact in Siem Reap province.

The update was shared recently by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, adding that those antiquities were discovered by the authority’s experts through an excavation at the bottom of pond in the Northern part of Angkor Wat temple.

According to archaeologist Mr. Im Sokrithy, Director of Temple Conservation Department in Angkor Park and Preventive Archaeology, the wooden structure remains in good shape.

He continued that it was buried properly with many layers of sands, stones, plant and grain stumps, sea animals, porcelain pieces and the Hindu statue.

This is the first wooden structure discovered with the Hinduism statue, emphasised the department director.

It, he added, is a new proof for the research about the history of the construction of Angkor pond, Angkor temple, environment and people’s lifestyles in that era.

Might want to change the headline to 1,000-year-old.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- Cambodian archaeologists have unearthed a large centuries-old statue of a turtle in an excavation at the famous Angkor temple complex in the country’s northwest.

The 56-by-93 centimeter (22-by-37 inch) carved stone turtle believed to date from the 10th century was discovered Wednesday during digging at what was the site of a small temple that had been built on Srah Srang, one of Angkor’s several reservoirs.

Researchers pinpointed where the temple had been and workers drained water off to enable the dig, which began March 16, said Mao Sokny, head of the excavation team of the Apsara Authority, a government agency that oversees the Angkor archaeological site.

The bottom half of the turtle remained buried Thursday while preparations were being made to lift it out without damaging it.

Angkor was strongly influenced by Hindu culture, and as a result, when a temple or other important structure was built, sacred objects would often be buried in the ground underneath as a gesture to ensure safety and good fortune. In several Asian cultures, turtles are seen as symbols of longevity and prosperity.

The dig also discovered some other rare artifacts, including two metal tridents and a carved head of a naga, a mythical creature.

Archeologists unearth another centuries-old tortoise (sic) statue at Cambodia's famed Angkor reservoir
Xinhua, May 9, 2020
Archeologists have unearthed another large centuries-old tortoise statue during excavations in a reservoir at the complex of Angkor archaeological park in northwest Cambodia, a spokesman said on Saturday.

"We found another sandstone-made statue of a tortoise on Friday during excavations, and it is a little bit smaller than the one we unearthed on Wednesday," Long Kosal, communications director and spokesman for the Apsara National Authority, which oversees the Angkor archaeological park, told Xinhua.

The tortoise statue discovered on Wednesday measured 56-by-93 centimeters, he said.

The archeological excavation at the 10th century Srah Srang temple standing on an island in the middle of Srah Srang (Royal Bath) reservoir at the complex of Angkor archeological park started in late March and is scheduled to complete within six weeks.

The dig also found a number of other ancient objects, such as metal tridents, a large piece of a dragon statue, and many crystal stones, Kosal said.

I'll will have a bet each way and say, maybe some kind of Terrapin.
half way between the two in habit and in habitat. That would fit the Siem Real geography.

I would love to see the fully dusted off piece when it comes out.
What is it exactly? What influences lead to it being in Angkor Wat?
even - did they ever have real turtles in the Tonle Sap? and stuff like that.
