long range effects of covid19

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Countries might start manufacturing again instead of outsourcing to the cheapest country

Or at least diversify their supply chain into multiple countries.

Mainland China took years to become a one stop shop for manufacturing. Expect companies to take a few years to move away.

SE Asia, India, and Cambodia (if can keep it’s act together) could be poised to tremendously benefit.

Conversely, If most of the labor can be replaced by robots, expect manufacturing to return. The greatest advantage the western worker had over the Khmer worker is to be the master of the robot. When the robot arrives in Cambodia, the Khmers will end up being mastered by the robot.

However, with a larger number of species in close proximity to each other and humans, it is easier for viruses in wild animals to cross over. I'd guess that this will eventually be traced back to a farm of some sort of normally wild animal
"Q: Do we know which animal caused the outbreak?
Short Answer: Not yet"

Keep curios Az. That is the origin of science.

This brief article is from highly regarded journal - Nature
It was published in the early days of tracking this outbreak - 8 days ago
since then further genetic science seems to firm up this general thinking even more.
Understanding of the origins of COVID-19 are in the very early days but advances are being made quite rapidly.
(eg, Pangolins have been downgraded as a possible intermediary source between bats and humans)

"Scientists are working tirelessly to identify the animal in hopes of eradicating the spread, but so far, no one is certain. Most sources agree that the origin source of COVID-19 is bats, based on similarity to other coronaviruses bats carry/have carried and a 2020 study that points to the bat as an indirect source of the virus."

Common sense when you think about it. Australia sends millions of tons of coal and iron ore to China to be made into steel , then it is imported back, at a price which includes shipping costs and insurance plus. It's not as if it needs cheap labour to manufacture as in the past, as we all know that automation and robots, now do, or can do those jobs.

Mostly it's caused by people / politicians with their minds stuck in the past.

An example in OZ would be the 40 billion to build submarines, was 60 B, now 80 B. Subs are obsolete war technology . What is their purpose ?. Remembering we have not been at war for ?? years, they are no bloody use in peacetime to fight fires, droughts, floods or rescue someone at sea. And that is if you can find skilled workers to run and maintain them, which we cannot do even for the ones we now have.

There is no need to fight a war with weapons, when a country can win a war by stopping manufacturing and exporting things like toilet rolls.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

When this is over and grandparents, parents, siblings and children have been killed by this, and economies have been decimated, pensions ruined etc, many in the world will bear an enormous hatred of China and it will last for at least a generation.

Products will be proudly marketed as "made nowhere near China"

I detest them already.

i think remote work and remote school will be shown to be workable

a lot of people commute long distances just to sit in front of a screen all day
similarly there are probably much better ways to teach and learn than the current obsolete and anachronistic model

i'm hoping some new approaches/tools etc will come out of this large scale 'experiment'

It's a cue for more automated manufacturing. The human workforce has been proven to be weak and unreliable.

Primary school,( even middle school) is NOT just about school work, its more important about allowing the child to learn how to socialize.

Now with the internet and smart phones, more important than ever
