Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Is that the anti-viral tape they are using?
Yes, the kind the viruses are attracted to and get stuck to.

What about long suffering inbound travellers, now that mild COVID-19 patients are officially allowed home treatment?

Patients with COVID-19 disease living in Phnom Penh are now officially allowed to receive care and treatment service at home

This was announced in a press conference on dissemination of procedures and mechanisms for home treatment.

Many welcomed this move but many others are complaining quite vociferously on the status of quarantine hotels when they land in the country.

They are compelled to pay $2,000 but cannot get to choose the hotel they would like to be quarantined even though it is their money.

The Ministry of Health has been mum on this issue and it is about time, some concrete steps are taken to tackle these issues before Cambodia’s quarantine hotels becomes a laughing stock.

Travelers are checked into anything from Sokha Hotel, Marriott, Toyoko, Phnom Penh hotel to California hotel, windowless “prison cell” hotels and so forth and Khmer Times has been overwhelmed about these complaints.

When a couple checks into the same room, the billing comes out for two rooms with parallel charges for everything.

Questions posed often get denials and demands for prove but no investigations by the authorities. It appears that the health authorities at the airport are independent of the Ministry of Health and can do as they wish.

To be coupled up in a windowless, with just a mere fan, denied food delivery service and charged for drinking water is outrageous.’

The point is: the travelers pay for the quarantine. Why can’t the ministry post the list of quarantine hotels widely so travelers can book their rooms and pay whatever the hotel charges them instead of being allocated unlivable hotel rooms?

It's a crying shame the Kandal market is closed. With no one there to keep check on all the faulty electrical wiring there is bound to be a electrical fault resulting in a big big fire. This could result in a brand new market being built and the Old Market could then regain its well deserved name again of being called the Old Market

They actually rebuilt a section along Street 13 side during the last closure. They demolished some of the wood and cardboard structure and replaced it with steel.

Not sure what you mean about the names though, it's Central Market that is called by the wrong name and should be "Grand New Market". Kandal Market is the real Central Market.

Svay Rieng: The Vietnam border has been closed to all but essential goods traffic. Alcohol sales and parties are forbidden.

Svay Rieng bans all alcohol sales, border crossings
Orm Bunthoeurn | Publication date 12 July 2021 | 21:10 ICT

The Svay Rieng Provincial Administration has suspended all alcohol sales for another week through July 18 and also suspended travel to and from Vietnam in a bid to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

In a notice on July 11, provincial governor Men Vibol said the Covid-19 outbreak in his province had yet to be brought under control.

Due to the ongoing epidemic, he said the provincial administration has decided to renew this measure to ensure the protection of the lives of the people, public health and social order.

“All public and private markets, marts, restaurants, cafes, food stalls, beverage shops and alcohol distribution depots must temporarily suspend all alcohol sales,” Vibol said.

He said gatherings of people to drink alcohol are strictly prohibited and those who fail to comply will be punished according to the law.

Provincial health department director Ke Ratha said on July 12 that Vibol had also suspended travel to and from Vietnam, allowing only the movement of goods.

“The provincial governor has instructed us to inspect the border, and corridors ... when people arrive in the Kingdom, the authorities will put them in quarantine centres,” he said.

As of July 12, Svay Rieng had recorded nearly 3,500 Covid-19 infections and 35 deaths, according to Ratha.

Another 33 dead today.

Unless they have acquired a supply of ICU beds, and trained staff, that 33 is about the total number of ICU beds in the whole country. I suspect many of the dying aren't even getting a shot at survival simply because where they ended up - one of the makeshift hospitals for example, that have no medical treatment beyond a drip, a fan and a bit of oxygen (if your lucky).

This post from last year claims there are little more than 35 ICU beds in total.

Anyone have any more up to date figures?

If Corona virus transmission takes hold in Cambodia, they won’t have enough hospital beds let alone ICU beds. Even if they did, the medical care is still far sub standard to international standards of care.

Currently those with Corona and who display symptoms are taken to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital (KSFH). It has 25 medical ICU beds.

Some interesting facts to consider:
The Cambodian health system is organized into three levels: central, provincial and operational district level. As of December 2015, there are 102 referral hospitals, including 9 National Hospitals, 25 Municipal and Provincial Referral Hospitals and 68 district-based Referral Hospitals.

The “flag ship” hospital in Cambodia is Calmette Hospital = it has 10 ICU beds.

By chance, a monk was tested positive for Covid-19 on a visit to Calmette hospital. As a result, there was a full-scale testing at the wat where he lives, and 20/104 people there tested positive. If nothing else, this raises questions about the true spread of the coronavirus inside Cambodia.

20 positive cases at a Phnom Penh wat raise fear of outbreak

Fears are growing of a COVID outbreak centred on a Phnom Penh wat after 20 new cases were found out of 104 people tested there.

The testing took place after a 23 year old monk tested positive at Wat Varin also known as Wat Prey Kaleap in Sangkat Prek Leap, Khan Chroy Changva, Phnom Penh.

The monk had been found positive by staff at Calmette Hospital after he visited a colleague there.

After finding the initial case, a medical team performed large scale testing at the wat this afternoon and found another 20 cases out of a total of 104 people tested.

It's absolutely everywhere and completely out of control. In my very small street, there are at least three known cases: a woman in my building at the beginning of May; the lady at the shop across the road; and yesterday another women was taken away in an ambulance. I bet there are others who are quietly staying at home and feeling rough, plus the asymptomatic ones.

The locals near me either work in Kandal Market or go there to buy food, catch the virus and bring it home to the family. It can't be avoided. Now it's shut, but it's too late.

Word on the street is that there are several people from the local Sangkat office (at 154/19), plus some local police, who have tested positive and they are all fully vaccinated.

People in high places must be realising that the vaccine is not stopping the outbreak and they have to come up with a plan to manage it. Hopefully the vaccine will reduce hospitalisation and death to acceptable numbers.

Before I go out each day I am checking over the balcony in case a pop-up testing station has appeared in my street, like they did at Kandal Market. Avoid those at all costs.

Covid's coming home...it's coming home... it's coming home...Covid's coming home....

Your number plates will have nothing to do with it.
There may be a temperature scan at the provincial border.
