“Confusion” over latest COVID-19 case numbers
Khmer Times
Ministry of Information
After the Ministry of Health released an abrupt press release earlier today with the latest COVID-19 case numbers, there have been questions asked over the latest supplied figures.
Normally, the Ministry releases a detailed breakdown of total cases, new cases, number of community cases, recoveries, deaths etc. This is accompanied by a provincial breakdown as well as a summary of total figures for all of the relevant categories.
However today, the Ministry’s press release consisted of a diagram, which has been described as “confusing” by many social media commentators – not least for the fact that it appeared to indicate 110 new deaths – where the actual figure is 3 new deaths, bringing the total to 110.
Today’s press release from the Ministry of Information
No further information has been forthcoming – again, this is a break with the normal Ministry routine, where several detailed sets of figures are released after the initial release.
The figures released were a far cry from the 900 plus cases revealed last night by highly reliable sources who have been fairly accurate until now.
Khmer Times has reached out to the Ministry of Health for further clarification. However calls were to the newly appointed spokesman was cut abruptly without a word being spoken.

UPDATE from Khmer Times on this tonight:timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 3:40 pmKhmer Times notes: This is a breaking story – more details will be added soon. AKP Phnom Penh, May 05, 2021 --
There were 672 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) recorded in Cambodia this morning; the tally thus jumped to 16,971, pointed out a press release of the Ministry of Health.
Of the total cases, 560 were imported from abroad, the same source underlined.
The ministry also reported the recovery of 228 more patients from COVID-19; bringing the total number of cured cases in the Kingdom to 6,019.
Moreover, the total fatal cases rose to 110 with three new deaths.

And yes, I thought the same thing. This was their rather odd press release on FB:

Re: Whatzup - Breaking Cambodia Covid News on Outbreaks and Lockdowns - NB News Items Only (no general discussion)
As I've said many times, these numbers are utterly meaningless without knowing how many people were tested. 650 positive cases out of 800 tests is something to worry about. 650 cases out of 10,000 tests...very different scenario.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never allow the dumb ones to lead the pack.

“More than 10 per cent of the samples tested in the red zone are coming back positive"xandreu wrote:As I've said many times, these numbers are utterly meaningless without knowing how many people were tested. 650 positive cases out of 800 tests is something to worry about. 650 cases out of 10,000 tests...very different scenario.
(KhmerTimes or Phnom Penh Post, I don’t remember)
So >10% positivity rate. But …
"A recent Cochrane review – an analysis of 64 studies – found that rapid tests correctly identify on average 58% of people who are infected with the virus but have no symptoms, meaning more than one in three cases are missed."
Sounds like 15% positivity rate in the red zones is very possible.

Phnom Penh man detained for “knowingly transmitting COVID to numerous people”
The Ministry of Information has disclosed a shocking case of a Phnom Penh man who infected 5 people with COVID – and put hundreds of others at direct risk due to his deliberate failure to obey health regulations.
On March 21, 2021, the man, named as Pech Kosal, had contact with a friend in O’Russey market.
On March 22, 2021, he learned that his friend had tested positive for COVID.
He went for a test at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital and got a negative 1st result, and was instructed by medical staff to quarantine for 14 days
On March 27, 2021, Pech Kosal went for a second test at Boeung Trabek High School with negative results and continued to quarantine at his home.
On April 2, 2021, Pech Kosal went for the third test at Boeung Trabek High School and had to wait for his test results for three days. In this time, he was again explicitly told by medical staff to quarantine.
However, on April 4, 2021, Pech Kosal and his wife left their house and went to his mother’s house in Prey Kabas District, Takeo Province.
When he arrived, he went fishing with his two younger brothers, and in the evening went to play volleyball with eight villagers.
On April 5, 2021, at 10:30 AM, the doctor contacted Pech Kosal and told him that his third test had a positive result and he was taken to Takeo province for treatment.
Medical staff then traced the man’s movements and contacts, and they found that he had transmitted COVID to five people and and put at risk more than 100 people.
The Ministry has described Pech Kosal’s actions as “intentional, and non-compliant with health regulations”.
He has therefore been detained by authorities under both Article 9 of the law – “Intentional transmission of of COVID 19 to others is punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison.”, as well as Article 13 and paragraph 3, article 22 of the sub-decree – “Individuals who do not perform their duties during the act of quarantine shall be punished by a transitional fine from 500,000 Riels to 2 million Riels.”
The Ministry hopes that by making a public example of this citizen, it will reinforce the message that quarantine must be strictly observed and even the smallest lapse in vigilance can lead to the spread of the deadly virus.

Re: Information on Coronavirus / COVID-19 in Cambodia (Latest Updates April 2021)
I have searched many sources about the curfew and alcohol ban and everything , including the extensions say that they finish on midnight tonight 8 May.
Does anyone have any newer info please?
From April 11-24 in the capital, the sale of alcohol is prohibited at all markets, supermarkets, restaurant, cafés, food stalls and shops. This ban was extended for a further two weeks until May 8th 2021
Cambodian Prime Minister HE issued an administrative order on “Prevention and Control of COVID-19 and Other Deadly Infectious Diseases” on March 31, 2021.
Local authorities now have the power to restrict or even prohibit residents in high-risk areas from leaving their houses or lodging.
According to Article 1 of the sub-decree “Provisional administrative measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Phnom Penh with a duration of two weeks from the 1st to the 14th April 2021”.
As a result, according to Article 2, business activities are temporarily suspended – these include ” food stalls, restaurants, cafes, bars and restaurants in hotels that accept customers to eat or drink alcohol between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am.” say media outlets CNE and Khmer Times.
