Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Hopefully never. The risk of transmission through formites is tiny at best. The obsession over putting alcohol on everything is based on outdated research from a year ago.

I'd be more worried about what chemicals they put in there. What doses are being put in? Are they being diluted properly (ppm)? Had the "chemical" been proven to kill Covid-19? Any long-term effects to exposure?
The Cambodiana hotel installed one of those spray booths at the door and required everyone to go into it and do a twirl. I closed my eyes and held my breath every time. God knows what was in the spray.

Has anyone been out and about in PP today? Are there more roadblocks than before?

Have they got their demarcation lines and village boundaries organised yet?

Lot of plastic tape around 172. People ignore it. Apparently some more cases in 172 last night

This man would have been at the very close to the front of the queue for vaccination. I don't suppose his Ministry of Information will be informing us on the issue of what he had and when he had it.

This Sinovac affords very limited protection after one shot and takes at least a month after the second shot to achieve just over 50% efficacy, according to real time studies in Chile. The great and the good may well be under the illusion they are now out of danger.

At the age of 77 and being a high top guy I'd expect him to have received AstraZenica instead of Cinofuck.
Well, if he did, and had a second within the correct timeline, he's pretty unlucky. If that is the case there is going to be a lot of very worried people at the top table.

Maybe a curious and brave journalist will ask the question.
As the second AZ shot is after 12 weeks, he wouldn't have had it.
Yes, you are right. The AZ didn't get here until March 2nd.

But, AZ initially recommended a 4 week gap, their trials were based on that. The UK just took a flyer and stretched it out to 12 weeks to get as many people vaccinated with the first shot as quickly as possible. It was a big gamble that seems to have paid off.

There is no reason to delay the booster shot for another 8 weeks.

The news about the 12 week sweet spot broke in early Feb, so they would have been aware of that by March.

Either way we will likely never know.

I just wonder if they understand this properly, not just the top brass but down the food chain as well. Vaccination is not a magic bullet. It affords some protection after a period of time. Until the second dose is given and a further period of time has elapsed, the much vaunted 90+% protection is then arrived at.

Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, said the data showed the 12-week interval between doses was "the optimal approach to roll out, and reassures us that people are protected from 22 days after a single dose".

another tragic death

One of the rare great filmmakers to survive the Khmer Rouge regime, Mao Ayuth was also a respected poet in the country
PHNOM PENH--Information Secretary of State and well-known film director and poet Mao Ayuth died on April 15 after contracting the coronavirus.
The announcement of his passing was marked by hundreds of Cambodians sharing his poetry on social media and Prime Minister HE paying homage to him.
Hospitalized on April 5, Ayuth was later found to have contracted COVID-19. According to the Ministry of Health, he also had underlying health conditions such as diabetes.

According to an article written by Tilman Baumgartel—a media critic, writer and university teacher in Germany who also taught at the Royal University of Phnom Penh—Ayuth was born in 1944 in Srei Santhor District in Kampong Cham Province. He had embarked on his film career when he took part in a script-writing program at the Ministry of Information in the mid-1960s. His feature film “Beth Phnek Hek Troung” (close my eyes, open my heart) in 1975 had been a success.

During the Khmer Rouge regime of April 1975 to Jan. 1979, Baumgartel writes, “t was sheer luck that Mao Ayuth survived the Pol Pot period. He pretended to be a wedding photographer, when interrogated by Khmer Rouge cadres, and got away with it after a lie detector test. He survived as a peasant, fisherman, and laborer.”

Deputy head of the Film Department at the Ministry of Propaganda, Information and Culture in the 1980s, Ayuth released in late 1988 early 1989 the film “Chet Chong Cham” (I Want To Remember) about survival during the 1970s through the 1980s, which was made on a budget of $400, Baumgartel writes. The film starred Kai Prosith who became one of Cambodia’s most popular actors in the 1990s. His film “Ne Sat Kror Per” (The Crocodile) released in 2005 was his most ambitious production and popular success, he said.

The passing of Ayuth touched many people across the country. “[He was] an important senior person in national television and the Cambodian film sector and training for so many of the younger generations including me and other film actors,” said Information Secretary of State Kem Kunawath, who previously served as director general of the state-owned television network TVK.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
