Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

A 59-year-old Cambodian man from Kandal succumbed to the deadly virus on 9 April 2021, according to the Ministry of Health’s announcement.

The man was tested positive of COVID-19 on 9 April 2021. He passed away at 10:50 before he could be admitted to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital.
Doctors concluded that the 59-year-old Cambodian man died before being admitted to hospital due to COVID-19.
Not sure if closing bars, restaurants, cutting out sales of alcohol, will work or not, as many are still going to be with their families ( if they can) this week
BUT something needs to be done. The government needs to show its trying .....
Keep in mind roughly 150 traffic fatalities within that same month... And still under people with face masks AND shield but no lids on... *Facepalm*
Yes, more people die of some kind of accident in a week than people have died of Covid so far in the KoW. But those are regular occurrences people are used to and deal with on a daily basis. Homo Sapiens are a strange species....

Electricity is pretty deadly here, but yesterday morning EDC came to replace a master circuit breaker in the meter cabinet outside in the street. A young guy was sent up a metal ladder (on a wet pavement) and changed the breaker while the whole thing was still live. I stood a good 3 metres away.

Of course, he and his work mates all worn their face masks. Can't take chances with this deadly virus.

A Khmer friend of mine lost his best friend who was doing the same thing, he got a shock and fell off the ladder, dead at 30 with a wife and kid.

this is NOT good;
from twitter:
-Phnom Penh Municipality announces 56 COVID-19 positive people who haven’t been located because they gave false contact details.

-This is a clear sign that there is no way we can suppress the transmission, and a worse situation might be looming.

so if each of these people comes in contact with 10 people 1 out of those 10 becomes positive an that 1 comes in contact with...
and on and on

HE Blames Bad Governance, Orders Stringent COVID Measures as WHO Warns of Health Disaster
BUT its HIS government>>>>
PHNOM PENH--Prime Minister HE on April 10 recognized that the worsening situation prompted by the recent COVID-19 community outbreak, which has claimed 25 lives and infected more than 3,000 people over less than two months, was instigated by a governance issue.

“My habit is I don’t blame anyone for any crisis, but I recognize that our recent community outbreak has been due to our governance issue,” HE said, pointing out to the collusion between the security guard and people under quarantine as well as the opening of entertainment places without the local authorities being aware of it.

“That is why we need to strengthen our governances everywhere,” he stressed, adding that stringent administrative actions and law enforcement are needed.

It's sad the iron man doesn't realize these people gave fake contact details because they don't trust their government. 'Stringent administrative actions and law enforcement' are not going to change that.

Yes, the level of 'laissez faire' or 'what could possible go wrong' can be truly shocking in the KoW.

Until things go wrong and someone ends up electrocuted, drowned, exploded, crushed by a truck etc etc.

But at least it happened while they were wearing a mask.

Cambodia logs 29th Covid fatality, 157 new infections
The Ministry of Health on April 11 reported three more deaths from Covid-19 and 157 new infections, all but one of which were linked to the February 20 community outbreak.

The imported case is a Nigerian who arrived via South Korea on April 9.
Among the 156 cluster cases, eight are Chinese nationals and the rest are Cambodian.

The deceased patients, aged 36 to 72, are all Cambodian residing in the capital and the provinces of Kandal and Svay Rieng.

The Nigerian arrived the 9tnh and was dead on the 11th>
that's some quick acting virus

did he not test 72 hours before departure and get a negative result?

Covid-19 has been spreading through Phnom Penh restaurants, markets, small businesses, private gatherings and parties, and Cambodia stands “on the brink of a national tragedy” unless the outbreak is stopped, the World Health Organization said in a statement issued Saturday.

“This outbreak is different from previous outbreaks in Cambodia,” said country representative Li Ailan. “The B.1.1.7 variant spreads more easily between people and can cause serious illness. Many countries with strong health systems have been overwhelmed by this variant. We need to ensure the same doesn’t happen to Cambodia.”

The B.1.1.7 variant of Covid-19, first identified in the U.K., emerged in Cambodia in February. The variant is thought to be very infectious and causes more serious symptoms.

The WHO’s warning was issued ahead of the upcoming Khmer New Year holidays, over which the government has issued an inter-provincial travel ban.

The country is in the midst of its worst Covid-19 outbreak to date, with more than 1,000 new cases announced over the past two days.

Many have been linked to popular and crowded markets in the capital, such as O’Russei, Doeum Kor and Boeng Trabek Plaza, and a garment factory in Meanchey district.

The WHO said that in the past two weeks the virus had been spreading in Phnom Penh restaurants, markets, small businesses, private gatherings and parties.

“We stand on the brink of a national tragedy because of COVID-19. Despite our best efforts, we are struggling to control the virus,” Li said. “Unless we can stop the outbreak, Cambodia’s health system is at high risk of being overwhelmed, which would have disastrous consequences.”

Thanks for the hyperbole WHO, "National tragedy and "consequences will be catastrophic" are not very helpful at this juncture.

What would be helpful is a few million doses of vaccine and the vaccination process being administered by the WHO on the basis of clinical need and not on who the government thinks is most important.
