Coronavirus Diaries

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Hey coronavirus diaries,
I'm "stuck" in Kampot. There's a huge Cham (Khmer-Muslim) community here and Ramadan (Muslim holiday with religious fasting and feasting) starts tonight. Lots of local people on the streets, driving along the Kampot riverfront, compared to these past few days. (The general population have been quiet recently, and the road traffic very calm.)

Expats in Kampot don't seem to understand about social distancing at all. When the first cases of coronavirus arrived in Cambodia, for the first few weeks nothing much happened in Kampot, until the local police closed the bars, then the restaurants, dormitories in hostels closed also. Then by magic, everything opened up again. It's the Cambodian paradox. I don't understand it, but everybody is having a party in Kampot. End of the world syndrome ???

A bit of social distancing at the bar after 10pm ? You are kidding right ?

I think i know where i want to live in the next decades when other “apocalypse” events like this one are bound to happen. Underrated places like Kampot where people can’t be bothered with craziness of the world and live their lives as ever. After all, nobody is dying, so why give a sh*t? Legit and rhetorical question. I am sorry if i make an impression of an internet bot for repeatedly pointing out the obvious. Wish i were in Kampot now to join the fun instead of home imprisonment with nothing else to do but browse internet forums.

While Cambodians are asked to put off their weddings and funerals until after the coronavirus crisis, the foreigners are partying on as usual. Nothing wrong with that, except that if you are Khmer and you want to have a (big) party, get married, or have a funeral ceremony and you can't, you might think this is not fair.
