International Women's Day in Cambodia 2020

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Heads Up: The 8 March is International Women's Day.
Gender equality is being promoted this year by the Foreign Affairs Minister, and Cambodian women can rejoice about this amazing news.
(As long as they dress appropriately, according to government guidelines, and do not post 'pornographic' photos of themselves dressed in lingerie on facebook, thus bringing shame on Khmer women in general.)

International Women’s Day celebrated in the Kingdom
Voun Dara | Publication date 03 March 2020 | 23:34 ICT
The ministries of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Women’s Affairs on Tuesday outlined a key message in the run-up to celebrating the 109th anniversary of International Women’s Day, “Peace Promotes Gender Equality”.

Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn said at the pre-anniversary celebration at the ministry that the theme essentially showed the indispensable significance of peace in promoting women’s rights and freedom in society. International Woman’s Day falls on March 8.

“I sincerely thank the gender working group of our ministry for organising this celebratory programme to remind us of global women’s movements that have demanded economic, social and political equality for women.

“One hundred and nine years ago, women were denied many rights and even today, some are still deprived of them in certain countries.

“Our Khmer ancestors valued women as the providers of the light of happiness for families. As the old saying goes, Seedlings save the land, women save men,” he said.

Sokhonn said presently, the promotion of gender equality was a priority in the Kingdom’s national development policy.

What is he referring to? The suffrage movement? Like a vote actually makes a piss of difference in many countries. :?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

International Women's Day remains a public holiday.

7 August 2019: According to a sub-decree issued by Prime Minister HE, the six holidays to be cut next year are Meak Bochea Day, National Day of Remembrance, International Children’s Day, Paris Peace Agreement Day, International Human Rights Day and King Norodom Sihamoni’s birthday.
There will be one extra day of public holiday at Khmer New Year, but the three day holiday for HM the King's birthday will be reduced to one day.

What's happening on International Women's Day this year ?
Well, last year, Cambodian women were invited to celebrate International Women's Day by staying at home, and by not participating in street rallies or any sort of 'Women's marches' or public gatherings.

Fortunately, the rights of women have evolved rapidly over the past year, and for 2020, the authorities have organized a "Women's Run" or mini-marathon of 10 kilometers in the streets of Phnom Penh. This will allow women to celebrate Women's Day in a healthy fashion.

So, get your running shoes on. There is a full run of 10k, and a shorter version of 4k. Men are also cordially invited to take part.

I'm not a fan of these demographic holidays personally. Mother's day, cool. But being a woman itself is not an honor or achievement.

Why is Mother's day "cool" and being a mother "an honour and achievement" ? Lol. That's very old-fashioned thinking.

As for International Women's Day, it's just a reminder that in much of the world women still need a leg up to be treated as equals to men, as in equal pay and conditions for equal work. In Cambodia, the factory workers are still asking for such progressive things as paid maternity leave and that pregnant workers be spared from working with dangerous chemicals. These are factory rules that apply in all western countries.
For me, Women's Day is a wake-up/shake-up of all that needs to be improved for women in Cambodia. ;-)

Or if you're single you could always put on a dress and lipstick and see if they say anything...
