Thailand Travel Restrictions and Info

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Curbs 'needed' to flatten curve
Infections, deaths tipped to soar further
published : 14 Aug 2021 at 04:44
The government will decide on Monday whether to extend lockdown measures further as daily infections continue to soar, with an estimated 60,000–70,000 new daily cases predicted for next month unless curbs stay in place.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, will also meet on the same day to discuss whether to ease some Covid-19 restrictions to allow some essential businesses to reopen on the premises of department stores.

The government previously extended lockdown and curfew measures in Bangkok and 28 other dark-red provinces for two more weeks from Aug 3 to Wednesday. The government will evaluate the situation and decide whether to further extend restrictions.

I JUST CHECKED the link jayne posted, and thats exactly what to do !! i booked my flight on friday 30th to fly on monday 9th. I think its the time you need to do all the paperwork, i didnt need a visa as i can stay 45 days without visa. Booked flight with emirates, because they offer for free a travel insurance, including the 100.000 dolar coverage, included corona. It all went more or less smooth ahaed.
Update on Patong yesterdaynight: Police came 19.30 in an Irish pub, and taking fotos from beer on the tap, it was mine, but didnt touch it, said i didnt know whose it was. And then left, dont know they closed the bar, i think so. On Bangla road everything was closed at 21.00. Then i put my joker in: having some dinks with some ladys on the roadside until about midnight. Started heavy raining and went home !!
Cheers !!

I can't see what additional measures would have a further positive impact given the comprehensive restrictions currently in place, so continuing to extend for the next couple of months at least seems inevitable. Only solution is to improve vaccine speed but unfortunately that isn't fully within the governments control given the error they made in initial vaccine sourcing policy. The pain will continue for the rest of this year and into next and very little they can do about it now.

cases hit 109 in Phuket, hence reason their going to be out enforcing the drinking and closures.
have closed the wet market in town ( near Robinsons) so all the fresh markets in town are now closed for at least a week

they have said will reevaluate the restriction for phuket on the 16th BUT as cases are still hitting high numbers nationwide cant see any domestic travel on to the island for at least another 2 weeks.

Thailand extends lockdown for a fortnight as COVID-19 rages
Maximum restrictions, curfew remain around Bangkok as pandemic center

BANGKOK --The Thai government has extended lockdown measures for two more weeks in order to try and bring a severe third wave of COVID-19 under control as confirmed new cases continue to surge.

Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesperson for the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), told reporters on Aug. 16 that the government had decided to extend the lockdown and nighttime curfew, which was due to end on Aug 18, until Aug 31.

Taweesilp said bank branches inside department stores would be allowed to open, but electronics shops, restaurants, IT and mobile shops would remain closed. He said the CCSA considered that many of services provided by these outlets can be handled smoothly enough online without exposing people to the risk of infection.

Maximum restrictions and a nightly curfew from 9 p.m. to 4 p.m. are being applied in a dark-red zone of 29 central provinces, including Bangkok. The area is home to around 40% of the population, and generates three-quarters of Thailand's gross domestic product.

COVID-19 cases began to surge in a third much more serious wave after Songkran, the lunar new year holiday, in mid-April. The number of daily confirmed cases shot up from 965 cases on April 13 to a record 23,418 on Aug. 13, and daily cases are expected to remain above 20,000 for some time.

As of Aug 16, Thailand had confirmed 928,314 COVID-19 cases in total with 7,734 deaths.

The CCSA is continuing to test in affected communities, particularly in Bangkok and its environs. It has also required companies with more than 50 employees to create their own isolation wards in order to reduce demand for beds in public and field hospitals.

Following the lockdown, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council has revised the economic outlook for 2021. It is now forecasting 0.7-1.2% growth, down from the 1.5% to 2.5% predicted three months ago. This is the NESDC's third downward revision.

It seems like a key part of the job description in Thailand is the ability to come up with catchy names for the schemes or promotional programmes that are conjured up with every week, no doubt the result of a severe brain storming sesh in a nice 5 star hotel or resort. " Good Guys in Bad Guys Out " from the Immigration Dept was a personal favourite, in practice it always seemed the other way round to me.

We've had a few damp squibs from the Tourism Authority of late as it attempts to reopen things. Phuket's " Sandbox " was a bit uninspiring and Pattaya's " Move On " is firmly stuck in reverse gear. However today I read of Chiang Mai's worthy effort, if the Northern Hill Tribe vibe is your thing then come October you can be " Bubble and Sealed " in Charming Chiang Mai . The mind boggles :D

the sandbox;

Aug 20 - 101 new cases
Aug 21 - 126 new cases
Aug 22 - 124 new cases
Aug 23 - 73 new cases
Aug 24 - 156 new cases
Aug 25 - 189 new cases
Aug 26 - 169 new cases
The current Phuket tally also does not include 39 COVID patients brought back to Phuket under the “Bring Phuket people home” policy, or the 74 Phuket Sandbox arrivals who have tested positive for the virus after landing on the island since the Sandbox scheme began on July 1.

now that thailand is a red zone for the uk, will having to quarantine on returning back ot the UK if one travels to the phuket sandbox Stop UK arrivals?

i'd say Yes
Thailand makes Bloomberg’s list of ‘worst places to be’ for current phase of the pandemic
Adding insult to injury, Bloomberg has put Thailand on its list of most poorly performing countries during the current phase of the pandemic.

According to Bloomberg, “The bottom five in August’s Ranking are Southeast Asian economies, a region that’s emerged as the new virus epicenter with the world’s highest monthly death toll per capita: Thailand at No. 49, Vietnam at No. 50, Indonesia No. 51, the Philippines No. 52 and Malaysia in last place.”

Bloomberg gave the reason as follows: “[Thailand] dropped eight spots as it saw a delta-fueled resurgence in cases, followed by stringent restrictions over 40% of the population.

Great effort for getting there. Whilst all (accurate) information is helpful and appreciated, your reply above was a bit vague if you don't mind me saying so.

The procedures linked by Jay provide for the following:

1. Buy health insurance, buy plane ticket, book hotel (for 2 weeks ?), pay for covid tests in thailand
2. Apply for COE
3. Get Covid test pre-departure

And your response was just to say yes that what you did haha. Certain things remain unclear, such as:

Is the COE an online application ? (granted, some might know this already)
How quickly did you get a response on the COE ?
How did you know you would get a positive response ? Did you consider it a risk outlaying all that money before knowing if you would be accepted ?
Was it easy to find flights ? Did you have a contingency plan if the flight cancelled ?

Also how are you getting on there now ?
