Global Effects of the COVID-19 Virus (Coronavirus)

as of Monday, Japan is closing all schools for 1 month>
will other countries follow?
US stock market lowest since 2008

Good interview on BBC this morning with a Dr in Wuhan, ( sanctioned by the Chinese goverment) stating deaths are rising and everyone needs be prepared.

83,342 infected ( with one lady being infected TWICE<
2,856 deaths
36,458 recovered
50 countries have at least 1 infected

Should we be worried?
I already am.

I have not been a doomsayer, but I did think this virus was not quite 'just flu'. It does seem that it has a nasty propensity to develop into serious pneumonia in otherwise healthy people, which is not what flu does.

However, I have thought for a long time that the economic fallout will be significant. Travel and tourism is the first to fall, but now the break down in the supply chains is in full swing the effects will start to bite soon. Stocks of finished goods and parts to finish other goods are being depleted with no replenishment dates in sight. Management will be tested and many will not cope.

I can't think of any sector than will be unaffected. Most will be negatively effected with a few in the positive; the accountancy and bankruptcy firms will do well, so too the lawyers dealing with all the breach of contracts and defaults. Funeral homes will do well.

With so many people living payday-to-payday in the western world, if substantial numbers of companies start laying off staff without pay the shit will really start to hit the fan.

My worry is that western governments have not got what it takes to contain this. China has two factors on it's side; it's a total dictatorship (with a compliant populace) and it has endless resources to back up it's policies. Western governments have none of this. This virus is out there and I don't see anything stopping it. We may be able to slow it down but that will be it. And that will just drag this out for month's or years.

So far over $3 Trillion has been wiped off share prices as the markets begin to realise that just about everything is a 'sell'. It's just the start; wait until the true numbers start to be revealed.

Things are going to get a lot worse.

Agree, but what about other non western gov'ts?? Iran, India, Africa, Sth America, Indonesia, Middle East....they are even less likely to be able to deal with it. And the knock on effects..

US is stopping flights from countries other than China now.. How long before borders close up and trade shuts down?

This thing looks more likely to cause the next financial crash..contagion becomes self fulfilling..

They don't have endless resources, and even if they had it the use of them would be useless without serious production restarting. Proof of that can be seen in China now starting to downplay the effects of the virus in country in an attempt to re-start production. Productions have been cut by an estimated 50-70% for over a month now. Without production you can support you companies for only that long, after that there will be hyperinflation in no time.

Will be interesting to see if people are willing to get back to work. Schools still closed. CCP party congress rescheduled, but please come to work.

Still wondering why there are not much, much more cases in the tropics. You can only cover up so many cases....

Opinion piece.

Millions of uninsured Americans like me are a coronavirus timebomb
Carl Gibson
I haven’t gone to the doctor since 2013. When you multiply my situation by 27.5 million, that’s a scary prospect
Fri 28 Feb 2020 09.10 GMT

Like 27.5 million other Americans, I don’t have health insurance. It’s not for a lack of trying – I make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to buy a private health insurance plan on the Affordable Care Act exchanges. Since I can’t afford to see a doctor, my healthcare strategy as a 32-year-old uninsured American has been simply to sleep eight hours, eat vegetables, and get daily exercise. But now that there are confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States, the deadly virus could spread rapidly, thanks to others like me who

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are confirmed coronavirus cases in at least 50 countries on six continents, and more than 2,800 patients have died from the virus. This certainly qualifies as a pandemic under the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of the term, which, under a typical presidency, should necessitate a swift response from US health officials. However, the Trump administration appears to still be prioritizing the profit margin of the healthcare industry over preventing the spread of a deadly pandemic.

Something people have not taken into account is this virus could be used by certain groups of people to '' get even '' with those that have kept punishing those certain groups.. Eg,, imagine a Palestinian person contracting the virus and traveling to Israel, spitting/coughing on his/her hand every five minuets as they enter a bus, go up the escalator in a shopping center and other popular places.

This is going to be the cheapest biological weapon that the oppressed in this world have ever had.

True. Also, some infected people might not be able to resist the temptation to visit their old and frail parents or grandparents to speed up the inheritance process.

I agree with this, Plenty of flights form China to many countries yet no infected people?
Dont fear what they report, fear what is NOT reported..

A Silent Epidemic? Experts Fear the Coronavirus Is Spreading Undetected in Southeast Asia
By Laignee Barron
February 28, 2020 2:04 AM EST

As coronavirus cases continue to soar globally, in at least one region a steady façade of optimism persists. Southeast Asia’s foreign ministers have joined hands with China and declared their intention to “stay strong!”

Yet their hastily called meeting in secretive, socialist Laos last week suggests not so much resiliency as the need to shore up mutual support. Health experts are widely skeptical of the numbers reported by China’s neighbors, and believe the deadly infection is spreading undetected throughout much of Southeast Asia.

With infection clusters increasingly sprouting outside the mainland, where the virus originated, many fear these pockets—rooted out or not—are sustaining the outbreak and pushing the world toward a global pandemic.

The disease, officially COVID-19, has sickened over 83,000 and killed more than 2,850, primarily in China. But cases have spread to more than four dozen countries, and been identified as far away as Brazil and Finland.

Strangely absent from the list are Myanmar and Laos, which border China, as well as Brunei, East Timor, and Indonesia—of which the latter had daily, direct flights to the virus epicenter, Wuhan. Every other country in the region, all beneficiaries of Chinese aid, investment and tourism, has reported cases.

The secretive cult "Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony", that is partly responsible for the fast spread of the coronavirus in South Korea, has links worldwide. In Korea, over a million people have signed a petiton calling for the sect to be dissolved.
Singapore newspaper The Straits Times investigates:

South Korean cult's activities in Singapore mirror its shadowy operations elsewhere
Feb 28, 2020, 11:29 pm SGT

SINGAPORE - It is a religious group that operated in secret, luring Christian youths and young adults via a front, and then compelling them to keep the group's existence a secret.

Recruited members were not allowed to contact each other, verify teachings with other churches, or speak to their families about the group's activities.

This was how members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus operated in secrecy here, including setting up companies under the guise of providing consultancy services or workshops.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said this in a statement on Friday (Feb 28), revealing the workings of the ultra-secret religious cult in Singapore.

Their modus operandi here mirrors tactics they have used elsewhere in the world.

The group, whose name in full is the "Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony", originated in South Korea.

It is also at the centre of the country's coronavirus outbreak in the city of Daegu. Over half of South Korea's more than 2,300 coronavirus cases are linked to the church.

Shincheonji, in the Korean language, means "new heaven and earth". Founded in 1984 by religious leader Lee Man-hee, the church is widely seen as a heretical Christian group, which claims to have over 200,000 adherents around the world. It is not officially recognised in Singapore.

So far, five South Koreans and two Singaporeans are assisting in ongoing investigations, said the MHA. The group has less than 100 members here, Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam said on Friday.

Among the group's radical beliefs is one which says that its founder Lee is the second coming of Jesus Christ, and that he will bring 144,000 followers to Heaven with him on judgement day.

The church's website also describes Lee as an angel of Jesus.

"Shincheonji followers believe Lee Man-hee is immortal and has an eternal life," Professor Tark Ji-il, an expert in heretical Christian groups at Busan Presbyterian University in South Korea, told the AP news agency.

"To propagate their belief, they often approach their relatives and acquaintances or sneak to other churches without telling them they are Shincheonji members."

In South Korea, Shincheonji is organised into "12 tribes", each named after one of Jesus' disciples.

On its website, the church says its has 300 mission centres in 15 countries, including the United States, China, Australia, Japan and the Philippines. It opened a branch in Wuhan last year.

The website goes on to say that hundreds of pastors have renounced their ordainment to join Shincheonji.

But Shincheonji has also come under intense criticism in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in South Korea.

Over a million South Koreans have signed an online petition calling for the forcible dissolution of the shadowy group, after reports emerged that Shincheonji members were uncooperative and hampered health authorities' efforts to trace and contain the outbreak.
