Costa Rica is as easy as it gets, their economy is basically set up for tourism, San Jose has a central walking street and casinos downtown with all that comes along with that, the city has become pretty safe to walk around but get a cab at night, Arenal volcano is about an hour out of San Jose, Monteverde cloud forest is not far from that, I always liked Tamarindo for surfing and some decent scuba diving , Quepos/Manuel Antonio sits off the national park, Playa Hermosa has great surfing, Jaco next to it but I'm not a fan, the last 3 places are easy to get to by bus outta San Jose. I'm pretty bored with CR myself and it's been a while since I've been to some of these places, it's got too touristy for my tastes, English is widely spoken especially on the coasts.

Panama City, I really like Casco Viejo, some cool rooftop bars, Tantalo was the first, there's also a fish market/eatery the Japanese help them build, across the street in an old green building one of the funniest strip clubs I've ever been in(think it's called Mayorista, ironically the cheapest beer in the Country). Portobelo is strait up on the Caribbean coast, an old Spanish fort it's where they shipped the gold out, supposedly where Sir Francis Drake was buried at sea, decent Scuba diving. Bocas del Toro is full of young backpackers. It's interesting as Panama still holds firm to their colonial roots as the Conquistador Balboa's name is everywhere including the name of the currency. The Panamanians speak good English, lots of Venezuela refugees there and Colombians that don't, be careful of pickpockets especially downtown at night, the Canal is a must.

I can tell you about the DF and Medellin later, I also love good food/drink and can tell you some places if that's what you're into. when are you going? I'll be down that way in March and April.

You might actually visit Victoria, on Vancouver island. Probably the most English of Canadian cities and lots of brew pubs! Ironically, Vancouver City is not on Vancouver Island. LOL.

And just because you see an opioid vending machine, does not mean you can use it. Users must have medical approval and ID for access.

Planning something similar without Canada myself. Columbia and work north to mexico. Whats the situation with atm fees and can you open a bank account as a long term tourist like in Cambodia or do you need to jump through hoops?
