Destitute American AMBROSE CHESTER Arrested for Living Illegally in Siem Reap
Cambodia News (Siem Reap): On February 09, 2020, at 10 am, the Department of Investigation and Procedure at the Siem Reap Immigration office received a United States citizen, AMBROSE CHESTER, 51 years old, who was arrested by local police for living on the streets in Siem Reap with no passport, no visa, and no money.
The police said the American man came to Cambodia from Thailand on a one month tourist visa on January 3, 2020, through Poipet border. He then lost his passport, but he didn't report it to the police or his embassy. He didn't have any money to pay for a room in a guesthouse, so he slept on the streets in Siem Reap.
The American man was picked up by Siem Reap police and sent to the deportation office to carry out the legal procedure.

I just do not get it. How does an American come half way around the globe, then run out of money and have to sleep on the streets? Should we blame imbeciles like No Joke Howard (RIP) or Jimi the Hobo? Those imbeciles put out videos exhorting other idiots to come to Cambodia and say its so cheap and easy.

A lot of people arrive here because thye have problems at home. Some are not the most finacially well educated and get conned out of their money, someare just stupid and blow it. Some have been slowly bleeding assets trying to stayin thailand and Cambodia is the nearest place to go when you cannot afford Thai retirent visas anymore.
For Americans I suspect most of south and central America is as easy and I have no doubt there are just as many down and outs there as here. One factor is definitely the ease of getting drugs in Cambodia. that seesm to claima lot of victims,

OK that explains a lot. Thank you. However mental defectives like Jimi the Hobo help other mental defectives to e even locate Cambodia on a map in the first place.

With the pollution, crime, plentiful drugs and hookers, this country does not attract the majority of upper-class citizens from the gene pool. Plus, most Americans vacation in-country.
Still here, in country...

It is a global world. People with mental illness can hop on a plane just like they can hop on the local bus.
Or develop one any where any time.
Get used to it. It is a snapshot of almost exactly the same situation back home.
Same park bench - different town.
Visas, tickets etc are just details in a life that has slipped out of full control - just the same as not paying the rent, bills, responsibilities, etc. at home.
They usually do not choose to make bad decisions, to not organise the visa, to not fly back home last year when they could - they have lost control.
They deserve (imo) just the same level of understanding, at least, if not compassion, as the mentally ill and the homeless anywhere.
Or, condemn them for being loosers/pisspots/wasters whatever, if that's your bag.
But these guys are no different to those in this situation anywhere. They almost all have some serious phycological or mental health issues.
And it sure ain't no surprise, or anything unusual at all, to see them here.
Shrug not even sure why it rates a front page.

A well defined line must be drawn somewhere there between irresponsibility and unfavorable circumstances though. If not, it will be easy to claim bad luck for those irresponsible and be a burden on society. But i guess it’s too late past certain age, that normally should be taught by parents. Not judging here, but every case like this should be a lesson for all travelers to be better prepared, have several layers of safety net and behave responsibly.
