Wouldnt it be fun to stand next to the lights with a big pair of airhorns. Won't work in Cambodia, noone stops for red lights anyway

Agreed, and that is why it wouldn't work in Vietnam either. Next headline: road rage in Delhi.

I think it’s roots are somewhat deeper in history. (My own view based on years of observation..... and earache)

Back in my childhood, there was a favourite uncle who used the horn a lot.

Approaching a corner, Honk.
Pulling up out side the house, Honk.
Pulling away from the house, Honk.
Junctions, level crossings, people crossing the road, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, humpback bridges.....Honk, Honk, Honk. None were immune from this manic horn honking.

In his early days of car ownership, circa 1920s, we were told it was required that you Honk your horn. The man with the red flag walking ahead of these horseless carriages having long since met his demise. Probably run over by the exuberant driver who as yet didn’t have a horn.

India, and it’s various offshoots. Yes, I agree, they do appear to be the worst. Matched, possibly by Italy.
Whatever bureaucracy was introduced to India through the empire, they have since made into an art form. One form or piece of paper duplicated so many times so that everybody and his/her secretary has a copy.

Why should honking horns be any different?

A friend in Bangladesh had driving lessons for his son. The son was criticized by the driving instructor for not using the horn enough.
Driving ability is secondary to using the horn.
With modern rush mentality, too much traffic, and a blatant disregard for even common sense rules, the horn is less a safety item and more a weapon.
