More details: According to a later news report, the child had lit the firecrackers and threw them in the drum, but when they did not explode immediately, he went to take a look in the drum and was caught by the blast.

You want alot of air and vaporised gasoline such in a emtied and then closed barrel. Perfect mix for a big boom.
