Researchers visiting private care homes in Chiang Mai have found eight homes where guests from the UK are living thousands of miles away from their families, because suitable care in their home country was impossible to find or afford.

“Thailand already has a long history of medical tourism and it’s now setting itself up as an international hub for dementia care,” said Dr Caleb Johnston, a senior lecturer in human geography at Newcastle University.

Fake news!

Everyone knows that the UK has free healthcare and socialised medicine (NHS) just like Europe and Canada, basically everywhere except the USA.

They're probably just coming for the cheap beer and ciggies.

I met an old guy in Bangkok who popped down the shops in Manchester and ended up in Thailand. He was totally confused.

Providing you are broke.

If you have assets, like a house worth a few hundred grand, the local authority will want to deplete your assets. If you need home care only your house doesn't come into the equation. But...if you need residential care as all dementia patients need eventually, once your savings are depleted the house goes next. Once that is depleted then the local authority picks up the tab.

If the dementia sufferer has a very high level of assets it might be worth looking at a reputable care home in Thailand. But once dementia has set in for residential care to be a requirement you are normally talking about one of the children having a power of attorney of the person affairs and that is subject to a Court of Protection order with annual financial return to the Office of the Public Guardian.

I am not sure how they would view the news that dear Papa has been shipped off to Thailand with no NHS coverage, no social worker oversight and a 20 year old Thai nurse he calls "mother"!

Sorry, please educate me.

British taxpayers should be paying full tab for the care of people who have loads of money and assets such as houses?

I am sure if it was put to a vote, British taxpayers wouldn’t vote to pay for everything for those who have the means to pay for themselves. That and the massive tax increase that it would take to cover such a cost.
