The new Omicron subvariant BA.2: what we know so far
Danielle Ellis, B.Sc.By Danielle Ellis, B.Sc.
Jan 26 2022

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant of concern has spread rapidly since its emergence in late 2021. Presently, an Omicron subvariant known as BA.2, first identified in late 2021, has made headlines due to its rapid spread.

While Omicron has approximately 60 mutations, it is thought that its sister lineage may have 85 mutations. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated over the weekend that this lineage differs from the original Omicron strain by several mutations, including those of the spike protein, the SARS-CoV-2 protein that mediates host cell entry. This variant has also been termed the “stealth variant” due to a mutation that renders it ‘invisible’ as Omicron to PCR testing.

BA.1 and BA.2 are about 20 mutations apart. Interestingly, the two Omicron sub-lineages are sister clades that split from each other several months ago, and are not derived from each other. Both carry a roughly comparable mutations relative to the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain.” Professor Francois Balloux, director of the UCL Genetics Institute

BA.2 has spread to over 40 countries, including the US, UK, India, Australia, and Norway. In the latter, it currently accounts for half of Omicron cases. It is currently unknown why BA.2 has dominated so quickly in Norway; however, enhanced immune escape or transmissibility has been suggested.

What this means for public health?

Current reports liken the symptoms of the new lineage to that of the original strain of Omicron: sore throat, headaches, nausea, etc. It is believed that there are no differences in disease severity, with some even suggesting the symptoms are milder.

ust a couple weeks ago it seemed like the worst was behind us and the wave of COVID-19 infections driven by the new Omicron variant was beginning to ebb in many of the worst-hit places.

But epidemiologists warned that some new variant would eventually replace Omicron, potentially driving a new surge in cases. They were right.

This week, cases started rising again in several countries. And some experts think an elusive form of Omicron, the so-called BA.2 sublineage, might be responsible.

If that’s the case and BA.2 proves even more transmissible than baseline Omicron—the BA.1 sublineage–then we should brace for a difficult spring. BA.2 is already making inroads in the U.S. It could slow or even reverse our recovery from the first Omicron wave.

Don’t panic quite yet. But don’t let down your guard. And if you’re unvaccinated or unboosted, you know the drill. Yesterday was the best time to get your jab.

China Reacts to Covid Surge

Beijing bans restaurant dining as holiday begins in zero-Covid clampdown
Chinese capital says negative test needed to enter some public areas, sporting events and to use public transport
Agence France-Presse in Beijing
Sat 30 Apr 2022 15.02 BST

Restaurants across Beijing will temporarily ban dining-in and residents will need negative Covid tests to visit public spaces, officials said on Saturday, in a major ramping up of virus controls at the start of the Labour Day holiday.

The five-day break is typically one of China’s busiest travel periods, but the country’s worst Covid resurgence since early in the pandemic is expected to keep people at home.

Faced with the highly transmissible Omicron variant, Chinese officials have doubled down on their zero-Covid policy, quashing virus clusters through mass testing and lockdowns.

Despite mounting economic costs and public frustration, the capital city announced it would further restrict access to public spaces during and after the holiday period.

From 1 to 4 May, the city’s eateries will halt dining-in, and only allow deliveries, local commerce official Ding Jianhua told a press briefing on Saturday.

Authorities also said they had so far prepared 4,000 makeshift hospital beds – typically used for patients with light or no Covid symptoms – and were speeding up the setup of larger quarantine sites.

A negative Covid test taken within the past week will also be needed starting on 5 May to enter “all kinds of public areas and to take public transport”, according to a notice on Beijing’s official WeChat page.

For activities such as sporting events and group travel, participants will also need to show a negative Covid test taken within 48 hours, along with proof of full vaccination, according to the new rules.

China reported more than 10,700 domestic Covid cases on Saturday, with most in the country’s economic engine, Shanghai.

The PRC are surely delusional aiming for zero covid. Instead of enforcing harsh restrictions on their poor suffering citizens, why don't they:

1. take action to vaccinate the elderly which of course are the most vulnerable.

2. double down and throw the bathroom sink at efforts to tweaking their vaccines for Omicron?
On Friday, Shanghai government officials said that only 62 percent of the city's 3.6 million elderly - aged 60 and above - are fully vaccinated, and the rate among those aged above 80 years old is only 15 percent. The rate of those getting booster shots accounts for merely 38 percent.

I find this astonishing. The PRC have always withheld most of their information but I assumed they had vaccinated all the vulnerable a long time ago, and in a city like Shanghai I would of expected 100% fully vaccinated. What have they been playing at? Why is their millions of doses still being sent abroad?

Where we really all being used as guinea pigs for their vaccines? Or are they trying to kill off their elderly to improve their demographics?

Some Chinese told me the elderly distrust the Chinese vaccines and took distrust to to a new level. They've seen too much of the bad side of their government in the past I guess.

Since the start of the pandemic, 5x more kids age 0-19 have died from guns (~5,500) than from COVID (~1,200) in the USA.
