Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
Re: Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion
Another Covid variant has been found in France, according to scientists.
The mutant strain has 46 mutations that are thought to make it both more vaccine-resistant and infectious than the original virus.
Some 12 cases have been spotted so far near Marseille, with the first linked to travel to the African country Cameroon.
But there is little sign that it is outcompeting the dominant Omicron variant, which now makes up more than 60 per cent of cases in France.
The strain was discovered by academics based at the IHU Mediterranee Infection on December 10, but has not spread rapidly since.

Where did you get those 1000/300 numbers?nemo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 03, 2022 5:22 pm There is a new variant identified in France said to originate in Cameroon. They have 1000 hospital admissions with over 300 on some type of ventilation therapy. Not much info on it yet other than it seems highly transmissible and severeSARS-CoV-2 variants have become a major virological, epidemiological and clinical concern, particularly with regard to the risk of escape from vaccine-induced immunity. Here we describe the emergence of a new variant. For twelve SARS-CoV-positive patients living in the same geographical area of southeastern France, qPCR testing that screen for variant-associated mutations showed an atypical combination. The index case returned from a travel in Cameroon. The genomes were obtained by next-generation sequencing with Oxford Nanopore Technologies on GridION instruments within approximately 8 h. Their analysis revealed 46 mutations and 37 deletions resulting in 30 amino acid substitutions and 12 deletions. Fourteen amino acid substitutions, including N501Y and E484K, and 9 deletions are located in the spike protein. This genotype pattern led to create a new Pangolin lineage named B.1.640.2, which is a phylogenetic sister group to the old B.1.640 lineage renamed B.1.640.1. Both lineages differ by 25 nucleotide substitutions and 33 deletions. The mutation set and phylogenetic position of the genomes obtained here indicate based on our previous definition a new variant we named 'IHU'. These data are another example of the unpredictability of the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants, and of their introduction in a given geographical area from abroad.

From here - pretty thin. That's why I left it out of the quoted citation and qualified the statement

variant B.1.1.529
In the south of France (Provence, Alpes, Cote d’Azur) out of 1000 infected patients, nearly on third are under artificial respirator and in intensive care
On November 24, 2021, South Africa reported the identification of a new SARS-CoV-2 variant, B.1.1.529, to the World Health Organization (WHO). B.1.1.529 was first detected in specimens collected on November 11, 2021 in Botswana.”
This new variant is extremely potent in regards in its capacities to send patients in intensive care, nearly one third of all registered cases are so far considered “high risk of hospitalization and intensive care)

NEW COVID VARIANT: A patient in Southern France who returned from a trip to Cameroon was diagnosed with a variant with 46 mutations, including substitutions N501Y & E484K in the spike protein – worrisome mutations.
Cameroon/France variant signals high spread ability and original vaccine antibody evasion.

Nearly 300 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 worldwide over the past two years, and more than five million deaths have been reported.
The United States, India and Brazil have emerged as the countries with the highest number of confirmed cases – people testing positive – and deaths.
There is also an unknown number of people who may have been infected but were not tested.
According to epidemiological models, the true number of infections and deaths could be considerably higher than reported figures.

Oh great! Here's another new one..
“Flurona”, a combination of COVID and influenza diagnosed in Brazil
Brasilia: Brazil’s hospital system could be at risk as a flu surge across the country, just as Omicron strains settle. Some people have had a series of infections-or both at the same time, which is called “Flurona”. It has occurred in at least three states so far, and experts say it could increase as Omicron, a more contagious variant of the coronavirus, becomes more prevalent.
In the Middle East, Israel reported the first case of combination diagnosis. Pregnant women are unhappy enough to catch both illnesses at once.
Brazilian hospitals are prepared for patients who are fighting two viruses at the same time.
Jean Gorinchitain, Minister of Health of the State of São Paulo, said: Three states that reported cases of co-infection. He said that about 60% of COVID cases tested in Brazil’s most populous state, São Paulo, came from Omicron, adding that the strain is likely to predominate within two weeks.
Little is known about the health effects of continuous or co-infection. Claudio Maierovich, a public health doctor who is the former director of the National Institute of Public Health, says that it is probably a more troublesome scenario for different viruses to multiply independently and infect two different strains of COVID at the same time. .. Still, Estevao Urbano, director of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, believes that people infected with influenza and COVID are at potential risk of needing more care.

Personally think the numbers of infected is worthless nowadays as so many get it, sick a few days, ( or not at all) and recover
the numbers one should be looking at is
hospitalizations and deaths

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

How come we didn't attribute the great majority of 2020 deaths to Pnuecovid then? Because that combo was the big killer
Flurona can fuck off

With the exception of Russia and maybe Turkey, the top 10 is pretty much China's shit-list from 1-10. The only country missing is Australia.
Economic chaos, enormous public borrowing, civil unrest, governments floundering around and traumatised healthcare systems.
Nice job. A not a bullet fired.
