Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines and follow-up procedures for home-based treatment for Covid-19 patients with mild or asymptomatic cases to prevent virus transmission to family members and others.

Patients whose temperature is lower than 37.5 degrees Celsius and without running noses, sore throat or cough are not required to take medication.

Adult patients or children over 30kg who has a temperature over 37.5C with muscle pain and sore throat are advised to take 500 milligrammes of Paracetamol three times a day. Children weighing 20-29kg shall take 300 milligrammes of Paracetamol three times a day.

Adult patients and children aged 6 and over who develop other symptoms such as stuffy and running nose and cough are advised to take eight milligrammes of Bromhexine three times a day, or alternatively 10 milligrammes of Cetirizine one time a day.

That sounds very similar to standard doctor's advice in the UK for colds and flu.

Go home, have some Lemsip (Paracetamol) and go to bed.

I think we have been on the same page for a long while. The limitation of daily tests supress the real numbers. The positive rates are hovering about 10% (7000 tests - 700+/- positives) so extrapolate that number in the areas of high infection rates and you get some big numbers. The fact the have resolutely refused to reveal PP's numbers tells us they have something to hide.

Get jabbed up and avoid busy places. Stick to one bar and a few close mates and keep your fingers crossed.

----------------------------------

I've been assuming that 7,000 includes the arrival tests for passengers and the two week quarantine tests? Plus departure testing.

If so then its more than 10%.

Here in Siem Reap I believe we've had an outbreak at one of the larger markets - supposedly several hundred people tested positive - with many folks "disappearing" before being tested. I haven't driven by but am told its now closed down. Big part of the problem is that folks don't really understand this new variant is different than what existed previously. Many folks assume if they are outside they are ok. The police came and took away a woman a few homes down the road as she tested positive, I assumed they'd be back to test those in the vicinity but no one showed up this weekend.

The past two days we've heard about an ambulance about every two hours during the day - the local kids call out "Covid is coming". Unfortunately, they would be more correct to say Covid is here. I think this Delta variant is now widespread regardless of what numbers the government publishes.

@BklynBoy Yea that info is way outdated, so many websites, including Cambodian Govt, Embassies and Airlines need updating. Most comprehensive, current and accurate information and advice on current entry requirements and restrictions is available from the Cambodia Visa and Work Permit group on Farcebook.

Recently I was talking to an old friend who has been living in Siem Reap over many years, I asked him what the situation was with property and rentals. He told me it was a little difficult to rent at the moment.
Anyway I got in touch over a place I have been looking at, and thinking about it for sometime. The owners of the property asked me a few questions, I was asked were I was coming from.
But it is always best if you want to do such a move not to leave things too late, being to slow could lose you the move. Not the case here now, this is the reply I had in return, and to add to this how many towns and cites may follow suit?

The reply on the rental property -

We are actually only allowed to rent out to people who have been in the non COVID zones in Seim Reap OR have done 14 day quarantine after traveling.

Now, this is what I read on Facebook about the travel to Siam Reap -

From the UK today:
1,300 Scotland fans who travelled to London later tested positive for Covid
Scottish data shows almost 2,000 cases among people who attended Euro 2020 football events
Wed 30 Jun 2021 16.04 BST

Nearly 1,300 Scotland fans who travelled to London to watch their team play England on 18 June later tested positive for coronavirus, with a total of almost 2,000 football-related cases emerging from Test and Protect data on Wednesday, as Scotland continued to break its record for daily case numbers.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) analysis published on Wednesday revealed that 1,991 people who later tested positive had attended one or more Euro 2020 events during their infection period, a time when they “may have unknowingly transmitted their infection to others”.

Nearly two-thirds of cases reported travelling to London for a Euro 2020 event, including 397 people who were at Wembley for Scotland’s match against England.

Conclusions: All systematic evaluations of seroprevalence data converge that SARS-CoV-2 infection is widely spread globally. Acknowledging residual uncertainties, the available evidence suggests average global IFR of ~0.15% and ~1.5-2.0 billion infections by February 2021 with substantial differences in IFR and in infection spread across continents, countries and locations.

Hopefully more countries will follow Singapore soon.

The decision to allow 60,000 fans to attend the Euro 2020 semifinals and finals at Wembley is “a recipe for disaster”, a committee of MEPs has said, urging a rethink because of the surging number of coronavirus cases in the UK.

The European parliament’s committee on public health wants Uefa and the British government to reconsider their decision to allow Wembley to host the matches at 75% of its 90,000 capacity.

Allowing so many fans to watch the three matches, scheduled for 6,7 and 11 July, is “a health hazard and a clear unnecessary risk” states a letter from the European parliament’s committee on environment and public health, citing the 10-fold increase in UK coronavirus cases since early May.

The UK recorded 26,068 new coronavirus cases on 30 June, the highest total since January. But deaths are going up at a much slower rate, from a very low level.

The letter calls on European parliament president David Sassoli to urge his fellow EU leaders to take the matter up with Uefa and the UK government.

Citing recent forecasts that show the more transmissible Delta variant is likely to account for 90% of all coronavirus cases in Europe by the end of August, the MEPs say Uefa should reconsider its decision to hold the matches at Wembley, or “at the least that Uefa and the UK authorities reassess health safety measures and the crowd capacity decision”. The MEPs do not propose an alternative number of spectators.

They write:
Despite the worrisome situation, the UK government decided to increase crowd capacity at Wembley. We consider this decision a recipe for disaster.

Lambda variant: What is the new Covid-19 strain detected in the UK?

A NEW variant of Covid-19 has been identified in the UK with samples dating back to December of 2020.
The Lambda variant of the virus - also known as C.37 - was initially identified in Peru and has since become the dominant variant in South America, accounting for more than 80% of cases.
It was designated as a variant of interest by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on June 14 and has been detected in at least 26 countries, including the UK.
It was then designated as a variant under investigation by Public Health England (PHE) nine days later, due to a rise in international cases and several mutations to the protein that allows the virus to attach to human cells.

What does the latest research say?
In a new study that has not yet been peer-reviewed, researchers have suggested that Lambda is more infectious than the Alpha variant first discovered in Kent and the Gamma variant first discovered in Brazil.

The study was based on samples from healthcare workers in Chile and also suggests that Lambda has a higher "immune escape" compared with the other two variants in relation to patients who had received China's CoronaVac vaccine. The study did not look at other vaccines.

What is the state of Lambda in the UK?

As of June 30, a total of eight cases of the variant have been detected in the UK, but this is likely to be an underestimate due to an operational issue on potential cross-contamination of a number of positive Covid-19 samples.
In the same report, 275,233 total cases of the Alpha variant were confirmed across the UK and 161,981 of the Delta variant first discovered in India.
None of the identified Lambda cases led to death within 28 days of first contracting the virus.
In its initial report of the first six cases that were identified, PHE said that four cases were from London, one from the South West of England and another was in the West Midlands. All were linked to international travel.
