Global coronavirus death toll is double official estimates, analysis suggests

Across the globe roughly 6.9 million people have died from Covid-19, according to a new analysis which suggests the death toll is twice as high as official reports.

The report, published by scientists at the University of Washington’s renowned Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), found that fatalities are vastly undercounted worldwide due to patchy testing and overwhelmed health systems.

In India, for instance, the official death count is 234,083, but the IHME analysis puts this figure at 654,395.

The country is in the depths of a devastating coronavirus crisis, with makeshift pyres set up on wastelands and crematoriums usually used for dogs being repurposed to cope with the flood of coronavirus fatalities.

As the India’s escalating epidemic shows few signs of slowing, the IHME forecasts estimate that 1.4 million people will have died in the vast nation by September – when the global death toll will near 9.4 million. Currently, just over 3.3 million fatalities have been recorded globally.

“Given what’s unfolding in India right now, given our expectation of continued deaths, Covid is going to rival Spanish flu at the global level in terms of the count, likely, before we see the end of this epidemic,” the IHME’s director, Prof Christopher Murray, told reporters in a briefing.

“Understanding the true number of Covid-19 deaths not only helps us appreciate the magnitude of this global crisis, but also provides valuable information to policymakers developing response and recovery plans,” he added.

Almost every country globally has undercounted fatalities, but the IHME analysis found the countries with the largest epidemics to date saw the most unreported deaths between March 2020 and May 2021.

In the United States, the report estimates deaths have reached 905,289 – compared to the official toll of 580,063 – while IHME put Brazil’s fatality count at 595,903, far higher than the 408,680 fatalities documented.

But other nations that have witnessed far smaller epidemics also saw a large increase in the death rate when accounting for unreported deaths, the report suggested.

Egypt’s estimated death toll is more than 13 times higher than the official toll - 170,041 compared to 13,714 - while the team put Russia’s tally at 593,610. According to government records, 110,735 people have died from the coronavirus in the country.

And in Kazakhstan fatalities are 14 times higher than officially reported - 81,696, rather than 5,620.

It is not yet clear what accounts for the difference between official Covid deaths and excess mortality during the pandemic in some of these countries, but the team hope their report will trigger a reassessment of coronavirus records worldwide.

“Many countries have devoted exceptional effort to measuring the pandemic’s toll, but our analysis shows how difficult it is to accurately track a new and rapidly spreading infectious disease,” Prof Murray said.

“We hope that today’s report will encourage governments to identify and address gaps in their Covid-19 mortality reporting, so that they can more accurately direct pandemic resources.”

Following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak - News and Discussion

Interesting impact given high vaccination rate
Studies have shown that 60% vaccination rate is still not quite enough for herd immunity so big outbreaks are still possible.
Israel has about 70% of its population either vaccinated or having had the infection already (and so having protective antibodies) and it seems to be fairly stable in terms of very low numbers of new infections.

Picture of two pandemics: Covid cases fall in rich west as poorer nations suffer
India’s tragedy could be followed by Africa’s, campaigners warn, as wealthy nations fail to extend vaccines – and decide who will live or die

The past seven days has been a picture of two pandemics. Among the world’s richest nations, lockdowns and well-resourced vaccine campaigns, which have monopolised the early global supply of doses, have brought down infections and deaths. Economies have slowly opened. Restrictions have been lifted. Life has crept closer to normal, giving the false impression of an end in sight to the global pandemic.

In reality, as the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, pointed out, more cases have been reported in the past two weeks than in the entire first six months of the pandemic, with south Asia bearing the brunt.

Growing number of Asian countries ravaged by fresh coronavirus waves
By CNN

As India's coronavirus catastrophe worsens, new waves of infections are fast engulfing a growing number of nations across South and Southeast Asia -- with some grappling with their worst outbreaks since the pandemic began.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Wednesday that India had accounted for nearly half of all global infections and a quarter of deaths reported in the past week.
But cases have also skyrocketed in countries around India, from Nepal in the north to Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the south. And it's not just India's neighbours -- further away in Southeast Asia, infections are also surging in Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia.

"The Southeast Asia region reported over 2.7 million new cases and over 25,000 new deaths, a 19 percent and a 48 percent increase respectively compared to the previous week," the WHO.

I didn't notice The Guardian weeping when the rich west countries were on their knees and the poor nations of the world were so far untouched.

Now the west has INVENTED the vaccine and is vaccinating their TAXPAYERS that funded the vaccine R&D and manufacture, it's time for The Guardian to open up a big jar of 'rich white guilt' and throw it at everyone.

It's not all because of the vaccine though. The drop in Australia isn't because of the vaccine, fuck all people have got it there yet. They managed through lockdowns to recover from the largest outbreak in Melbourne last year and that's why the cases have dropped. Cambodia has given 60% more shots than Australia (on a per-capita basis) and yet has a substantial outbreak. It's all very well and good to cherry pick data but it's only really places where vaccinations have been widely done (such as US and Israel) that should be used to prove the point they are trying to convey.

Advice from India after Covid patients are coming down with a nasty complication called mucormycosis (it's a fungus that gets up the patient's nose and can get serious).

The Indian Council of Medical Research and the Union Health Ministry have issued an advisory urging people to wear shoes, long trousers, long sleeve shirts and gloves while handling soil, moss or manure.

John Campbell gave a radio interview yesterday that covers a lot of things - vaccines, WHO, herd immunity, international travel. Informative.
