Cambodia following Thailand's lead;

Cambodia bans entry into the country to all Indians and foreigners traveling from India or through India or having a history of travel to India three weeks before entering Cambodia by air or land. This ban will be implemented 48 hours after this announcement.

Sorry Richard but Thailand way behind the eight ball, better late than never, once again NZ leads the way (what have the other counties been waiting for?)

On Thursday, New Zealand announced it was suspending entry of travellers from India, including its own citizens. The suspension will take effect from April 11 and will be in place till April 28, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a news conference in Wellington

Quite right. Pretty tough to include it's own citizens but they have had plenty of time to get home.

Fears of Covid ‘tsunami’ in Fiji after outbreak found to be Indian variant
Covid-19 outbreak in Pacific nation has forced lockdowns across the country, after the island nation avoided transmission for a year
Guardian staff and Agence France-Presse
Wed 28 Apr 2021 04.00 BST

Fijian health officials are bracing for a “tsunami” of Covid-19 cases, after the Indian variant was detected in the Pacific nation this week, with lockdowns announced in an attempt to stem the outbreak.

The Pacific country had largely managed to avoid community transmission over the course of the pandemic, before a cluster emerged this month linked to a quarantine facility, and exacerbated after a woman with the virus attended a funeral with 500 people.

The permanent secretary for health and medical services, James Fong, said six new cases had emerged in quarantine facilities on Tuesday and events in India showed the threat posed by the strain could not be underestimated.

“We cannot let that nightmare happen in Fiji,” he said in a televised address.

“We still have time to stop it happening but a single misstep will bring about the same Covid tsunami that our friends in India, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States are enduring.”

As of Tuesday, Fiji had recorded 109 cases and just two deaths in a population of 930,000 since the pandemic began. There are currently 42 active cases, 18 of them detected at the border and 24 locally transmitted.

The cluster emerged after a soldier contracted the virus at a quarantine facility and transmitted it to his wife, who then exposed up to 500 people at a funeral.

Fong said there was evidence that soldiers who had returned from overseas deployments had broken quarantine rules by mixing with each other when they should have been in isolation.

It was a difficult choice where to put this! Anyone got any opinions on this article from the Khmer times?

A strain to contain: UK variant likely culprit behind massive surge in C-19 cases

As the deadly coronavirus continues to spread rapidly at an alarming rate, with high triple digit numbers of infections being reported daily, the likely source of this sudden surge is the UK strain of COVID-19.
Experts think the UK strain may be up to 70 percent more transmissible or infectious than the original one – although research by Public Health England puts it between 30 percent and 50 percent.

Research published in the British Medical Journal found the coronavirus variant originating in the UK, called B.1.1.7, is also substantially more deadly than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2.

The authors say the B.1.1.7 variant is between 32 and 104 percent deadlier.

The Ministry of Health has yet to come out with any statement that the strain is causing the rapid rate of infections, but it has previously acknowledged that it is present in the Kingdom and that it may be the reason for a sudden surge in COVID-19 deaths.

Good grief. I'm sure they said months ago it was the UK strain. And, assuming all the current cases were actually a result of the 20 Feb incident, they all would be.

John Campbell reported yesterday that the rates of infections, hospitalisations and deaths are all continuing to fall in the UK. Prof Tim Spector has declared that Covid in the UK should now be regarded as endemic and no longer as pandemic,

In the USA, the CDC has shown the way forward to a post-Covid world by suggesting what things will be safe or not, depending on whether one has been fully vaccinated. No other countries have gone so far yet but the CDC policy is likely to be followed by all countries as they acquire herd immunity. We will all be relieved to see that indoor choral singing gets the green light.

JC also reports on India and Turkey. In the absence of good levels of vaccination, lockdowns are the only answer. Travel restrictions as well, because the India problem is mostly urban and they don't want it spreading to rural areas. It is so good that Cambodia has good levels of vaccination and is continuing to get good supplies. As reported before, the experience from Chile supports the view that Coronavac is actually very effective, albeit it does require two doses before that kicks in.

John Campbell reported yesterday on Australia. They implemented compulsory (and well enforced) 2 week quarantine for all arrivals one year ago and backed it up with top notch contact tracing. That has kept case levels very low. Vaccine was a bit slow to roll out but they have done 70+, and now moving to 50+ (all AZ). Under 50s will get Pfeizer.
Things looking very good for Australia now. The only cloud is the rather high proportion of people who say they don't want a vaccine.

Latest Covid news from Vietnam

Vietnam confirms six Covid-19 community transmissions
By Le Nga April 29, 2021 | 07:52 pm GMT+7

The Health Ministry confirmed six new Covid-19 community transmissions Thursday evening, the first such cases in more than a month.

Five of the cases are linked to a migrant worker (patient 2899) who returned from Japan and tested positive in the northern province of Ha Nam after completing his mandated two-week quarantine in Da Nang.

Four of these patients – numbered 2901, 2903, 2908 and 2909 – father, mother, wife and child of the migrant worker, while patient 2910, also from Ha Nam, tested positive in HCMC, where he is visiting relatives.

The migrant worker had returned from Japan on April 7 and been quarantined at the Alisia Beach hotel in Da Nang. He tested negative for the coronavirus thrice during his stay. On April 22 he returned home to Ha Nam and self-isolated himself. But, on April 24, he was taken to a local medical facility for testing after he developed symptoms of cough, fever and throat pain.

Patient 2910, meanwhile, had shared a meal and drink with the Japan returnee in Ha Nam before boarding Vietjet Air flight VJ133 on April 27 from Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport to HCMC's Tan Son Nhat International Airport. From the airport, he took a taxi to his relatives' house in Binh Tan District.

After he heard that the Japan returnee had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, he reported to the medical station in Binh Hung Hoa Ward in Binh Tan and made a health declaration.

HCMC is now conducting contact tracing for Patient 2910. It has asked passengers and crew of flight VJ133 on April 27 to report to medical facilities.

Vietnam’s Covid-19 tally of 2910 cases includes 2,516 recoveries and 35 deaths.

Breaking News, Vietnam: HCMC Closes Nightlife
Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have decided to close local bars, discos and karaoke shops after finding cases of Covid-19 infection in the community.

The city's disco bars and karaoke bars will be closed from 6pm on Friday, April 30, the first day of the National Unity Day weekend (April 30) and International Workers' Day (May 1). Authorities cordoned off 20 Pham Dang Giang Road in Binh Tan district, home to possibly infected patients, after a 28-year-old man, infected but asymptomatic, arrived in HCMC from a town in the north of the country.

Ho Chi Minh City went through 75 days without Covid-19 cases in the community before Thursday evening.
