'This is the worst moment of the pandemic', says SAGE expert as it's revealed new 'Super-Covid' strain is 70% MORE infectious and makes up 60% of new cases in London

A SAGE expert has called the emergence of a new mutant strain of coronavirus that has forced the cancellations of Christmas as the 'worst moment of the pandemic' - as it was revealed the variant is 70 per cent more infectious than others.

British epidemiologist John Edmunds said today that as far as he's concerned 'this is the worst moment of the epidemic because of the extraordinary infectivity of the new strain' of Covid-19.

Speaking at an emergency press conference this afternoon, Robert Peston from ITV News questioned Boris Johnson, Professor Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance about the statement.

In response, England's chief medical officer Mr Whitty insisted the new strain - which has caused the Government to place London and the South East in a new Tier 4 of restrictions - was another of 'so many terrible moments in this epidemic.'

He added: 'But I have to say in my own view this is not the worst moment in the epidemic.'

Mr Johnson today warned the new strain - which has caused a spike in cases in the south - could increase the crucial R rate by 0.4.

But Mr Whitty earlier stressed there is nothing to suggest that new strain 'VUI – 202012/01' is more deadly or resistant to a vaccine.

Freightdog wrote: Sat Dec 19, 2020 6:57 am An interesting video on the subject, which voices many, if not all, of the concerns and thoughts that people have, if they take time to think about it instead of getting hysterical.

I watched the whole video and at the end of the day, my summary interpretation of what he is saying is that covid19 is no worse than seasonal flu with some years worse than others.

I then went to look at the comments and whether any of his contemporaries had responded to the video. However, the comments were turned off on it. YouTube 'Learn more' suggests 'The video owner selected the setting to 'Disable comments'. He also didn't mention that he used to work for Pfizer 9 years ago.

So I googled responses and found these which appear to debunk his earlier assertions:

https://healthfeedback.org/claimreview/ ... n-the-u-k/

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2 ... pandemic-/

https://www.newindianexpress.com/world/ ... 29256.html
These articles all use the term 'false' to describe all his opinions and therefore, just because they say that, they claim they have "debunked" them. What this guy is saying challenges the governments position and that of their Sage experts and the costs being imposed on the nation by their decisions. They are too committed to their course of action.

They never deal with the false positive rate issue properly and this is crucial. Mass testing means mass positives and mass panic. Annual average death rates are ignored. The fact that NHS management has greatly reduced bed capacity over many years and that every winter the NHS claims to be in crisis and near collapse is also forgotten. The fact that the NHS has the worst sickness absence rates in the UK is also never mentioned.

The standard MO of dealing with knowledgeable dissenters is just to blind people with science, quote their own findings as an authority for their assertions and then conclude, as if it was a certain fact, that the dissenters views are "false" and therefore have been 'debunked'. You then let social media do the rest with their soundbites. If they say "bullshit", people will rightly see that as vulgar and give it little credence. But say "debunked" and that sound like something a well educated and serious person would say; more professorial. People will take that more seriously. And they will repeat it. And hopefully believe it. But it hasn't been debunked, it's just been ignored to shut down any debate or alternative views. Keep an eye out for debunked, one day it might be used to describe the opinions and models of the SAGE group.

I am not surprised he turned off the comments sections, he'll just get hijacked by the conspiracy theory idiots with their Bill Gates and his microchip laden vaccines ideas. That is a sensible move.

Anyone who challenges the governments scientific advisors opinions and decisions must be trashed and silenced. Especially ones who really know what they are talking about. And even though the government experts cannot even agree amongst themselves.

Western governments are 'all in' with the response to Covid-19. They have bet the 'sheep station' on it. It can never be allowed to be revealed or generally understood that this is the most drastic over-reaction in history. I am not sure that everyone in government is completely wedded to the official position and in time it will start coming out that there were many dissenters in their ranks. But, for the time being, it's collective responsibility all round or and end to your career.

Covid cases recorded in Antarctica for first time – reports
Isolated continent reportedly registers first infections after 36 Chileans fall ill at research base

Tue 22 Dec 2020 06.52 GMT

Antarctica, once the only continent not to be affected by the coronavirus pandemic, has reportedly recorded its first cases. The 36 new infections are among people stationed at a Chilean research base and include 26 members of the Chilean army and 10 maintenance workers.

Spanish-language media reported the outbreak at the General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme research base on Monday.

In a statement, the Chilean army said: “Thanks to the timely preventive action … it was possible to relieve said personnel, who, after being subjected to a medical control and the administration of a PCR test ... turned out to be positive for Covid-19,” according to Newsweek. It reported that three crew members on a ship providing support to the base have also tested positive since returning from their mission to Antarctica.

Shocking. Kiwi pilot responsible for new Covid-19 outbreak in Taiwan:

Pilot blamed for Taiwan's first local Covid transmission since April
Taiwanese woman had contact with New Zealander who had flown flights to US
Agence France-Presse in Taipei
Tue 22 Dec 2020 08.45 GMT

Taiwan has reported its first local coronavirus transmission since 12 April, blaming a foreign pilot for ending 253 virus-free days.

Health authorities said a woman in her thirties had tested positive after having contact with the pilot, a New Zealander working for a Taiwanese airline who was confirmed to have been infected on Sunday after flying planes to the US.

The health minister, Chen Shih-chung, said the pilot had failed to “truthfully declare” his contacts and activities to authorities once he had been confirmed as a carrier.

Authorities said the pilot – who faces a fine of up to NT$300,000 (£8,500) – visited several establishments, including a department store.

The infection is a blow for an island that has been lauded for its pandemic response, having recorded just 770 cases and seven deaths after it shut its borders early and implemented strict quarantine rules.

Since 12 April, all positive cases have been either from a small number of citizens returning to the island or among the few foreigners and migrant workers allowed in for business reasons.

More from the UK:

Plans for 30-minute Covid testing in England halted amid accuracy fears
Exclusive: government shelves Christmas rollout of lateral flow test centres
Last modified on Tue 22 Dec 2020 16.41 GMT

The government has shelved plans to open rapid-turnaround coronavirus test centres across England over Christmas amid concerns from public health experts about the accuracy of their results, the Guardian has learned.

Ministers had planned to convert a number of existing testing sites into centres for lateral flow tests, which provide results in 30 minutes, to help cope with an anticipated surge in demand.

However, the scheme was halted last week after concerns were raised by directors of public health about the accuracy of the tests and the potential false reassurance given to people who test negative. A government source said the planned rollout “proved unnecessary”.

The development is a blow to the UK government’s £100bn “Operation Moonshot” mass-testing plan, which aims to increase the number of tests carried out each day from 430,000 to 10m by early next year.

It also raises questions about the plan to rapidly test lorry drivers taking goods across the Channel, which is one of the UK government’s proposed solutions to bring an end to the disruption at Britain’s ports.

The Guardian has learned that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) invited local health directors to convert their existing coronavirus testing sites into lateral flow test centres to help ease a possible surge in demand over Christmas.

But the plans were shelved within days of a phone call last week between the government and directors of public health, who raised concerns over accuracy.

It is understood that the government is instead planning to convert one testing centre and analyse the results before potentially expanding the scheme more widely. This process is not expected to conclude before the end of January.

Government figures from the mass testing programme in Liverpool revealed earlier this month that the tests missed 30% of cases with a high viral load and half of positive cases that were detected by standard coronavirus tests.

From the USA today:
Christmas travel rush ignores Covid warnings as California hits 2m cases
Thu 24 Dec 2020 15.17 GMT

As Covid-19 continued to surge across America, its death toll close to 326,000 by Thursday morning, 84.5 million US residents were expected to travel around Christmas and New Year, directly flouting public health officials’ repeated warnings that such travel could worsen the pandemic yet further.

Christmas Eve also brought the grim news that California had become the first state to record more than 2m cases of Covid-19. According to Johns Hopkins University, California had recorded 2,010,157 infections and more than 23,000 deaths. More than 18,000 people were hospitalised and many intensive care units were filled.

Elsewhere, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported that more than 5 million people passed through US airport security checkpoints from Friday to Tuesday. AAA Travel, however, said most would make their journeys by car.

Warnings about travel during the last holiday season were ignored. From 20-29 November, around Thanksgiving, the TSA reported 9.5 million passengers screened at US airports.

The federal Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said “travel may increase your chance of spreading and getting Covid-19” and continues to recommend “postponing travel and staying home, as this is the best way to protect yourself and others this year”.

Though air travel around Thanksgiving and Christmas is down significantly compared to last year, approximately 1 million passengers are still flying each day. Officials believe high Thanksgiving travel volume contributed to the current surge in cases.

Johns Hopkins recorded 228,131 new instances of Covid-19 in the US on Wednesday, for a total caseload of 18,449,726. There were 3,359 new deaths – a slight fall from the day before.

Surgeon General Jerome Adams urged people to celebrate Christmas only with their own households, and said that if they Americans cannot abide by such guidance, they should take protective steps such as providing good home ventilation.

“We can’t let fatigue cause us to make poor decisions this holiday season that end up making us backtrack, especially when we are so incredibly close to getting ourselves and everyone else across the finish line,” Adams said, referring to the commencement of Covid-19 vaccinations.

On Wednesday, the federal government announced it had contracted with Pfizer for 100m more doses of its vaccine, developed with the German company BioNTech and the first shot to be recommended for emergency use. A vaccine developed by Moderna is also in use and more than 1m vaccinations have been delivered.

Nonetheless, Dr Robert Redfield, director of the CDC, has joined a chorus of voices warning that this winter will be among the most difficult in US history.

“The reality is that December, January and February are going to be rough times,” Redfield told the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation. “I actually believe they’re going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation.”

According to the Covid Tracking Project, on Wednesday 119,463 people in the US were hospitalised with Covid-19 – a record. More than 22,000 were in intensive care. In states across the US, healthcare systems are under brutal strain. In California, the most populous state and which has been particularly hard hit, potential rationing of healthcare has been discussed.

Chonburi records 1st Covid-19 case in van of illegal Cambodian laborers
Chonburi recorded its first coronavirus case since the Samut Sakhon seafood-market outbreak when police intercepted a van of illegal Cambodian migrant laborers, one of whom tested positive for Covid-19.

The 11 illegals were in a crowded minivan when they were stopped at a checkpoint in Panthong District. All the occupants were tested, with a 19-year-old woman testing positive for the coronavirus, Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai said in a Wednesday briefing.

Canadian officials confirm two cases of new COVID-19 strain seen in UK

As suspected, this strain is already out there and if you look for it you will find it. The latest find have no UK connection.
Will the world now quarantine France, Canada, Australia, Italy and the Netherlands, as they have done with the UK, by banning all flights?

Several other countries, including Australia, Italy and the Netherlands, have also reported cases of the new infectious strain.

Officials in the Canadian province of Ontario on Saturday said they have detected two confirmed cases of the new coronavirus strain that first appeared in the United Kingdom (U.K.).

According to Reuters, officials identified the new variant in a southern Ontario couple with no known travel history, exposure or high-risk contact.

The report comes as the province instituted a new lockdown, with 4,301 new COVID-19 cases reported over the past two days and more than 2,000 infections per day for 12 straight days.

"This further reinforces the need for Ontarians to stay home as much as possible and continue to follow all public health advice, including the provincewide shutdown measures beginning today," Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario's associate chief medical officer, said in a statement Saturday, Reuters reported.

While experts are still looking into the origins and transmission of the new strain, scientists believe the variant is about 40 to 70 percent more transmissible than the original.
