I hope this is true...

Heathrow boss John Holland-Kaye is urging the Government to fast track a Covid-19 test which gives results in 20 seconds.

It comes after the Prime Minister announced plans for mass testing under so-called Operation Moonshot, in which millions of people could be tested every day so they could 'behave in a way that was exactly as in the world before Covid'.

The new Virolens test, which is said to provide results in 20 seconds, launched on Wednesday following a three-week trial at Heathrow Airport.

That's a shockingly amazing improvement if it's that accurate. I'm thinking it must be pretty good if the LHR chief is encouraged by it. Countries will be lining up to license and manufacture that miracle test kit. Unfortunately, every country will have to test it before approving it for national usage. So it could be a while, months likely and into the new year, before everyone is self-swabbing. Congrats to the UK inventor.

Just look at the specs:
Based on microscopic holographic imaging and artificial intelligence, the screening device uses a digital camera attached to a microscope to analyse saliva samples, with the data run through a computer which is trained to identify the virus from other cells, delivering an end result in just 20 seconds.

The Virolens system has a 99.8% sensitivity and 96.7% specificity, based on the results of an internal in-vitro validation study, designed by the University of Bristol.

While it does nothing to cure or prevent Covid-19, it certainly de-risks travel and could open up borders again, clean result - welcome to (fill in the blank).

Let's hope it isn't just wishful thinking

I seem to remember that Israel were one of the most proactive countries at the start of this thing and closed it borders immediately when it had virtually no infections. It just goes to show that once this thing is inside your borders it is virtually impossible to eradicate and the moment normal life resumes the virus will just carry on where it left off.

The world needs some new ideas on how to manage this thing as lockdowns just buy a little time at an incredible cost.

New Zealand to Lift Coronavirus Curbs in Most of Country on Sep 21
15/09/20 02:43
WELLINGTON, Sept. 14 (Reuters) - New Zealand will lift coronavirus restrictions across the country on Sep 21, except in its biggest city Auckland which is the epicentre of a second wave of infections, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday (Sep 14).

Ardern said Auckland's restrictions would be reviewed next Monday. She also said the government would immediately ease all physical distancing requirements on planes, a boost for Air New Zealand, which has had to limit passengers on its planes for months.

"I know this change will make a real difference to Air New Zealand and those parts of the country seeking increased numbers of visitors," Ardern said in a news conference in the South Island city of Dunedin, where she is on an election campaign trip.

Masks will still be mandatory on all public transport, she said.

Dr. Robert Redfield:

I’m not going to comment directly about the president. But I am going to comment, as the CDC director, that face masks, these face masks, are the most important, powerful public health tool we have. And I will continue to appeal for all Americans, all individuals in our country, to embrace these face coverings. I’ve said it: If we did it for six, eight, 10, 12 weeks, we’d bring this pandemic under control. We have clear scientific evidence. They work, and they are our best defense.

I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against Covid than when I take a Covid vaccine, because the immunogenicity may be 70 percent. And if I don’t get an immune response, the vaccine is not going to protect me. This face mask will. So I do want to keep asking the American public to take the responsibility, particularly the 18-to-25 year olds, where we’re seeing the outbreak in America continue to go like this [straight up] because we haven’t got the acceptance, the personal responsibility that we need for all Americans to embrace this face mask.

Texas Governor just announced further opening of Texas. Restaurants now can go to 75% indoor capacity. Hospitals can perform all elective procedures. Nursing homes can open for visitors.

Bars stay closed. The team is still deciding on how to make drunks follow social distancing is still a problem.

Covid scepticism behind high Bolton infection rate, says local MP
Exclusive: social media hashtag #thinkingforyourself bolsters residents refusing to follow rules

Nazia Parveen North of England correspondent
Sun 20 Sep 2020 10.13 BST

Covid scepticism in Bolton has led to it having the highest infection rate of coronavirus in the country, a local MP has said, as a #thinkingforyourself social media trend gains traction.

With 169 cases for every 100,000 people, the Greater Manchester town has the highest rate in England and has featured among the worst-hit areas in Europe. Health officials said infections had been doubling every four days.

Yasmin Qureshi, Labour MP for Bolton South East, said many people in the area believed the virus was a fake, government-constructed concept and as a result were refusing to adhere to social distancing guidelines. “There is a lot of confusion about the virus in the area and there are a lot of people now who do not believe it is true,” she said.

Qureshi added: “They genuinely believe it’s some kind of conspiracy. A lot of them don’t understand the rules either and so there are many who just aren’t following them – they think it is a way of controlling them somehow. It is very dangerous.”

One resident, Hayley Brandwood, whose young son was tested for the virus earlier this week, said many people were deliberately breaking the rules, bolstered by #thinkingforyourself.

The hashtag has taken off in local forums in Bolton, used by people who are not following the rules and criticising others for doing so.

Brandwood, 33, believes the surge in cases is related to the trend. “I would say that the majority of people around here are not wearing masks when they go into shops and if you do wear one you are considered a sheep,” she said.

“I’ve seen people laughing and shaking their heads at others who are wearing masks. It’s so frustrating. Lots of people in supermarkets, everywhere really, just not wearing them. They don’t quite understand how dangerous it is,” she added.

Brandwood said a number of high-profile people in the area had been using social media to share conspiracy theories about the virus. “It is all over Facebook, in local forums, with people saying coronavirus is not true and it is a way for the government to take control of us all. It’s so strange but it’s really began to take hold,” she said.

Earlier this week it was reported that the number of people being admitted to hospital in the town with confirmed or suspected coronavirus was rising. Hospital chiefs also said they were seeing an increased number of patients under-65 being admitted, with some in their in 40s and 50s, a significantly younger age group than at the peak of the pandemic in April and May.

Dr Francis Andrews, medical director at Bolton NHS foundation trust, said: “We are seeing more people being admitted with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 as a result of the very high rate of infections in Bolton. This is not a shift we want to see. The situation at the hospital is under control and we were well prepared for this.

“However, the rate continuing to rise is of concern, and we urge the people of Bolton to consider others when making decisions that could jeopardise their safety.”

HMMMM
low numbers in Cambodia,Thailand, Laos, Vietnam
could they be on to something here?

A new study that analyzed the coronavirus outbreak in Brazil found exposure to dengue may provide some level of immunity against COVID-19
