Cambodia Earns Nearly US$10 Million from Special Licence Plate Sales

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport generated some KHR 40.6 trillion (approximately US$10 million) from the sale of special licence plates in the January-June period 2022, a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The figures were shared in a meeting held on July 12 under the chairmanship of H.E. Ms. Koy Sodany, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Chairwoman of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Management of Sales of Vehicle Registration Numbers.

In the first semester this year, the ministry issued 19,766 exclusive customised vehicle license plates .

PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network): The Ministry of Public Works and Transport will hold an exhibition of special and personalised number plates early next year.

The exhibition is designed to give the public the opportunity to learn more about licence plates, and take part in auctions for them. The event will also feature displays by many of the Kingdom’s most popular automotive brands.

Koy Sodany – ministry secretary of state and chairwoman of the inter-ministerial commission to manage sales for special and personalised number plates – is chairing a working group tasked with organising the exhibition.

“We want to encourage as many banking and financial institutions, insurance companies and car dealers to participate in the event as possible,” she said.

“We also want to link vehicle registration to special plates, to allow banking and financial to cooperate in the auction process,” she added.

Sodany called on banking and financial institutions to work with the ministry by arranging easy payment options.

In 2021, the public works ministry registered 5,291 personalised number plates, with total revenue of over US$9 million. Almost 30,000 special plates at the capital-provincial level were registered, earning over $8 million. The plates first went on sale in 2019.

A special plate has Phnom Penh or the name of the province issued in Khmer at the top and in Latin below, The number begins with one class digit, dependent on the type of vehicle, followed by one or two Latin letters and then four digits that can be specified.

A personalised plate has the word “Cambodia” at the top, with one to eight letters and numbers on the next line. It can contain virtually any arrangements of letters and numbers, including people’s names if they so desire.

They do, but it's flawed for certain slang.

I noticed the home page for the MPWT license search has a default search of "420". Isn't that slang for something else readily available in the KoW ... ? Top marks to the web developer if so for slipping that in there!

Special Licence Plate Sales Earn Almost US$20 Million in Jan.-Nov. Period

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport generated some KHR78 billion (approximately US$19 million) from the sale of special licence plates in the first eleven months of 2022, a 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The figures were shared in a meeting held on Dec. 15 under the chairmanship of H.E. Ms. Koy Sodany, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Chairwoman of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for the Management of Sales of Vehicle Registration Numbers.

Starting in 2016, the special licence plate registration is priced higher than the normal ones, and the owners can keep the plate when selling their vehicle. 

As of November this year, the ministry issued over 231,000 exclusive customised vehicle licence plates, earning KHR343 billion (approximately US$85 million).
