Cambodian Kun Khmer legend beats Japanese fighter in kickboxing bout

Cambodian Kun Khmer legend Keo Rumchong beat his Japanese opponent in a kickboxing bout in Japan last week.

Rumchong won his fight against Kazuki Yamagiwa at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on Dec 29. The bout between Rumchong and Yamagiwa in the 67kg division was held as part of “Bigbang 37: The Road to Unification”.

The event involved 13 kickboxing bouts featuring fighters from Japan, South Korea, Nepal and Cambodia.

Rumchong won the bout by decision after three rounds. During the bout, Yamagiwa hit the canvas eight times and had problems dealing with Rumchong’s heavy leg kicks.

Matias Andres, co-founder and leader of The Riel Team, said he was happy with Rumchong’s performance during the bout.

The Riel Team is a Cambodia-based fight promotion and management team. It set up the bout together with the Cambodian representative of Bigbang Kickboxing, a Japanese kickboxing promoter.

“Personally, I was happy with Rumchong’s performance and training leading up to the fight,” he said.

Andres said that Rumchong did well despite entering the kickboxing ring for the first time and fighting in a weight class he is not accustomed to.

“He has over 160 fights, but it was his first kickboxing bout. He had trouble finding momentum because of the new set of rules. He could not use his clinch or his most powerful attack: his elbows,” he said. Yamagiwa, he noted, is a Japanese champion with a kickboxing background.

Rumchong, it was noted, fought in the 67kg, the lowest he has been in more than eight years. In his career, the Cambodian Kun Khmer champion mostly fought in the 72-74kg category.

Andres said Rumchong’s skills and strength proved too much for his opponent.

“Even though it was a back-and-forth fight, it was clear that Rumchong was the more powerful fighter, landing more devastating blows,” Andres said. “We would have loved to have gotten the finish, but since it was our first kickboxing event, the result was great.”

Known as the “Tiger of Battambang”, Rumchong has accumulated a record of 152 wins, 13 losses and 4 draws. Sixty-six of his wins came via knockout. He also represented the Kingdom in numerous international competitions.
