The People You Most Want To Avoid In SE Asia (and sometimes everywhere else too)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

He's in Geezerville, so probably just bored out of his skull.

Smoking Joe Conrad wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2019 6:12 pm While we are on this bullshit topic here are a few more:

‘The only falang in the village’ aka ‘the local celebrity’ - he lives like a local, dresses like a local, eats like a local and gets his nose out of joint if he sees another white face in his hood.

‘The I’ve been here longer than you twat’ - anything or anywhere you mention in country and he has done it or been there before you or anyone else.

‘The price expert’ who is usually also ‘The looking for land guy’ - he’s obsessed about the price of everything and will tell you in no uncertain terms if you pay too much for anything, this could be as little as 25 cents too much, and in his eyes of course you pay too much for everything. He also doesn’t hesitate to complain if he is overcharged as little as 20 cents as he expects to pay exactly what the locals pay as he has forgotten he comes from a vastly privileged background when compared to them and had more money than they will ever have. This guy is also often talking about his hunt for the perfect bit of land to buy and if you are also looking for land beware as he is definitely getting a far lower price per m2 than you and anything you suggest will be totally ridiculed.

‘The moaner’ - it’s all he does. Ever.
Yeah, the money guy (who lives 'cheaper then the locals') and the complainer (who 'loves it here, but...') are the worst for me.

There are also guys who live in a fantasy world where they used to date famous models/actresses, hang out with rock stars, own houses in exotic locations, and whose girlfriend you've never met is some bigwig's niece. Also, some health nuts/fitness freaks are quite annoying.

The absolute worst are actually the opposite of the complainers. They are usually American baby boomers for whom everthing is "so fanTAStic!".

The vet - this guy is an ex soldier and you will learn about this within minutes of meeting him. He did a tour of nam in 1969 but will cut his tales short as he ‘doesn’t want to talk about it’ even though he is always talking about it. He signs his emails Sgt.Ernie McButtfuck USMC ‘67-‘74 and will say shit like Semper Fi instead of goodbye.

Not to be confused with ex special forces bullshit guy who has never fired a gun in his life and will talk for hours about his time in combat or actual ex special forces guy who is a raging alcoholic, prone to violence and has PTSD (rare)

The deal maker. Every time you bump into this guy he's looking into a deal on a building, bar or business that's going to reap huge rewards. It's always a different deal because he's one of the unluckiest investors in SEA with each exciting opportunity falling over at the last minute..

But i will go further than that, and others have alluded to this also,
Finger pointing at anyone - up or down on the social scale - is usually a sign of frustration/ disappointment/ unhappiness at your own life.

And yes indeed, challenging that is the true test.
(one of them)
Yeah - this is the nub of the issue - however it provides a little mirth for the day...

It's actually a serious philosophical point Stern. I'm interested to hear more. Liven up the thread.

It can and does happen.

He may just be spreading his risks.

Took me a while to hit paydirt and even then it is small rewards on the scale of things.

It IS a tough country.

But I agree - huge rewards without a solid track record, immense persistence and patience is dreamland Hill Billy.

My retort to such people I meet is why waste time - come and meet General Manet with your idea. If good he will support you.

And I'm not bullshitting about that - is a quick presentation on Telegram direct to the man.

Yeah outdated bullshit - the Agent Orange caused derangement.

Old One Eye Ironman is the only guy in town.

Here's to the Green Berets and the AUS SAS and other servicemen who came on base before the Chinese takeover to show the modern stuff.

The boys are grateful.

Mish's memorabilia from their visits. (apart from the inevitable hangover after their farewell bashes - burrrrrppppp.)

The Expatrapeneur - this guy has numerous business schemes up and running from grasshopper farming (they are an excellent source of protein don’t you know) to cattle feed to quad bike rentals for tourists. He also has his eye on a big score - property development usually or opening a guest house or restaurant. He’s never run a business in his life back home but somehow he thinks running a business in a 3rd world economy is a piece of piss. He earns fuck all and would be better suited to humble English teaching and he would earn more too. But his ego won’t even entertain the idea. Those who can do, those who can’t teach and those who can’t teach teach fucking TEFL ffs. This cat thinks he is a doer even though his track record says he isn’t.

The non English speaking business guy - this guy is white but from a non English speaking nation and he flogs his national food, delivery only. If he’s German it’s sausages and hot dogs. Italian and it’s pizza. This guy hates TEFLers too but for different reasons than the expatrepeneur. If he were a native English speaker he would be teaching but he isn’t and he resents the fact as he thinks his English is excellent. (It isn’t.) He does some private English lessons to support his food game which is why all the kids on his street speak English with a thick German accent.

The fuckhead - this guy is in his thirties and somehow raised the money for the flight here. He was a drug addict at home and he’s like a kid in a playground here. He had some teaching gigs to begin with but keep getting sacked as his substance abuse went into overdrive. Now he is a full blown addict and he hangs about the tourist area blagging cash (lost passport story) of backpackers. He shares a room with a ladyboy and is hated by all other expats. His days are numbered.

The Spinster - she’s middle aged, divorced and no kids and teaches kindergarten. She hates male expats with a passion and thinks they are all perverts. Also she was on the shelf back home but here it’s even worse - every man has yellow fever and ignores her, she literally hasn’t been fucked since she got here, and she would never have a relationship with a local. So she has few friends apart from some younger expat women who work for charities. She often talks about going home and eventually she will.
