Three of Cambodia’s best cyclists will soon be flying to France for further training in preparation for major cycling competitions that are coming up.

The Cambodian Cycling Federation (CCF), in an announcement posted on its Facebook page yesterday, said the three are Kim Chantou, Huot Loy Raksmey and Yoeun Phi Yuth.

The CCF will be sending the players abroad in partnership with the Cambodian Cycling Academy (CCA). The CCA is a French-Cambodian continental cycling team established early this year.

According to the announcement, the French Cycling Association will foot the accommodation, meals, round trip airfare and miscellaneous expenses of the Cambodian athletes.

The trio, according to the CCF will train with foreign players under the guidance of coaches from France.

The training will start in September. The announcement did not mention the duration of the training.

“The training is intended to improve their ability and to give them more experience in preparation for future cycling competitions here and abroad,” the CCF said, mentioning the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam and 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

Davide Rebellin pens deal that will see him racing professionally at 50
December 14, 2020

Italian veteran Davide Rebellin will ride on in 2021.

Rebellin, who will turn 50 in August, is set to join a Cambodian-French continental level team in 2021. Former French WorldTour pro Johan Le Bon, who raced with FDJ and B&B Hotels, will also join Cambodian Cycling Academy next season.

“It was Davide Rebellin, my coach for two years, who asked me. He too will join this team,” Le Bon, 30, told the French daily Le Telegramme. “I am happy to share this new adventure. I was hoping to continue at the top level, but I’m staying with the professionals, and that’s the most important. I have not yet received my race calendar but the team should be invited to most of the southern French events such as Bessèges, the Marseillaise, the Route d’Occitanie.”

The confirmation of Rebellin’s arrival, revealed last week on the team’s Facebook page, is the latest chapter in Rebellin’s decades-long trajectory.

Rebellin, born in 1971, turned pro in 1992, some 28 years ago. He raced for a mix of top European teams, with a palmarès that includes the pink jersey in the 1996 Giro d’Italia, along with a host of other races. In 2004, he swept the “Ardennes treble,” and later won Paris-Nice in 2008.

Cycling justice caught up with Rebellin in 2008, when he served a two-year ban after testing positive for the banned blood-booster CERA after riding to second at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Rebellin returned to racing in 2011, and has since bounced between ProTeam and continental squads for much of the past decade. His career victory haul includes 61 wins, the last a stage at the Tour of Iran in 2017.

The Cambodia Cycling Academy was formed in 2020 by French rider Samy Aurignac, who has a strong link to Cambodia and whose father helps manage the team. The team’s service course is based in Alès, France, and American Barry Miller rode for the team this season.

Cambodia Cycling Academy to compete in Étoile de Bessèges
The Cambodia Cycling Academy (CCA) will join a major cycling competition in France next month.

Cyclingnews.com reported this week that CCA is among the many teams from Europe and other parts of the world that will compete in the Étoile de Bessèges.

The annual Étoile de Bessèges is held over five days in the south of France. It is part of the preparations ahead of Paris-Nice, the first European World Tour event. In additions to French teams, the race also features participants from Belgium, Switzerland, Ukraine, Australia, Sweden, Russia, Germany, Italy and other countries.

The 2021 Étoile de Bessèges will be held from February 3 to 7. The competition this year kicks off with a 114km road race around Bellegarde, according to the report. It will conclude with an 11km time trial around Alles.

The other participants in the race include Delko, Arkéa-Samsic, Total Direct Energie, Alpecin-Fenix, Bingoal-WB and 11 WorldTour teams, which could not join the other early races because of the COVID-19 situation.

This is the second time for the CCA to compete in the race. The mixed team was among the participants in the 2020 Étoile de Bessèges.

The CCA is expected to perform well in the coming race after adding several topnotch riders, including Davide Rebellin and Johan Le Bon, to its roster.

Rebellin is an Italian cycling legend, who is considered widely as among the most successful riders in the history of UCI Road World Cup and UCI ProTour Classics. Le Bon, meanwhile, is a former world junior racing champion from France.

The CCA is a continental cycling team that was formed in early 2020 to help develop Cambodian riders ahead of major international competitions, including the 2023 Southeast Asian Games. Samy Aurignac, a French rider with strong ties to the Kingdom, is listed as the founder of CCA.

A cycling competition to mark the Valentine’s Day will be held in Cambodia next month.

The Valentine’s Bike Race, as the event is officially called, will be held at Sihanoukville on Feb 14, according to an announcement from the Cambodia Events Organizer.

The event is a joint undertaking of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), Cambodian Cycling Federation and Cambodia Events Organizer.

“On 14 February 2021, The Cycling Committee would like to organise a bike race to celebrate the Valentine’s Day at Ocheuteal Beach, Sihanoukville province,” the announcement read.

“The Cycling Committee would like to invite all bikers, including elites, families and couples to participate in this meaningful event to have an unforgettable sweet memory of love and to experience the amazing beauty of nature, especially the course along the pristine beach,” it added.

Ocheuteal Beach is among the most popular beaches in Sihanoukville. It was previously known as UNTAC Beach.

There are three categories for the race: 40km, 25km and 15km. Registration is ongoing.

49-year-old Davide Rebellin in talks with other teams after not signing for Cambodia Cycling Academy
The Italian had been pictured holding a Cambodia jersey two months ago, believed to be his new team

Davide Rebellin’s hopes to continue racing into his fifties appear to have hit a bump in a road after his apparent contract with Cambodia Cycling Academy failed to materialise. The 49-year-old now continues contract talks with other potential teams for the 2021 season.

The Italian had appeared in a photo on Cambodia Cycling Academy’s Facebook page two months ago holding their jersey, seeming to indicate he would be joining the team to continue a career spanning four decades, having made his debut in 1992.

However, the team lined up for Etoile de Bessèges last week without him, and Eurosport France report it looks like Rebellin will be looking elsewhere for a ride this season.

The reason could be to do with Cambodia Cycling Academy’s current struggles to obtain a UCI licence, with cycling’s governing body currently investigating various claims of dysfunction within the team, which manager Samy Aurignac denies. After missing out on the GP Cycliste la Marseillaise, they obtained a special exemption that allowed them to ride in this week’s French stage race.
