Family angered over images of Amelia Bambridge’s body
In the wake of police ruling the death of Amelia Bambridge as accidental drowning, her family has expressed anger over gruesome images of her body floating in the sea that were circulated on social media.

The 21-year-old British tourist went missing on October 24 at about 3am after she partied on Koh Rong island in Preah Sihanouk province.

Her body was discovered on Thursday floating near the maritime border of Cambodia-Thailand, some 80 kilometres from where she was last seen. On Friday, police ruled out foul play as the cause of her death following an autopsy.

Facebook and Instagram users reportedly uploaded the images moments after the discovery of Ms Bambridge’s body. It is unclear who leaked the images.

Harry Bambridge, Ms Bambrige’s brother, reportedly requested Instagram to take down the images.

Some of the images circulated on Facebook were reportedly removed yesterday, though others were still available online.

British Member of Parliament Tom Watson told The Daily Mirror in the UK that: “This is completely disgraceful from Instagram”.

“Amelia’s family should have their privacy and wishes respected. Instagram’s standards are clearly morally redundant if they don’t rule these posts in breach of guidelines,” Mr Watson said. “This proves how urgently we need a tech regulator to hold companies accountable for decisions like this.”

The Interior Ministry on Friday said Ms Bambridge died by accidental drowning after an autopsy was conducted on her body.

Colonel Sut Sam Un, chief of the Interior Ministry’s technical and science unit, said no foul play was suspected after an autopsy was performed.

UK minister applauds Cambodia for retrieving Amelia Bambridge’s body
UK Minister of Foreign and Commonwealth Office for Asia and the Pacific, Heather Wheeler has expressed appreciation to the Cambodian government for locating the body of British National Amelia Bambridge, who died in an accidental drowning.

In a letter to Cambodian Ambassador to UK Soeung Rathachavy in which the Foreign Affairs Ministry published today, Ms Wheeler said she appreciated everything that the Cambodian government had done to help locate the body of Ms Bambridge.

“I have been following the case closely and want to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to your emergency services, and search and recovery teams,” she wrote.

“I can only imagine how difficult the last [three] week has been for all those involved, and despite the tragic outcome, we want to recognize and praise their efforts,” she added.

THE BROTHER of British backpacker, Amelia Bambridge, who drowned after disappearing from a beach party in Cambodia, has spoken of his heartbreak after discovering pictures of her dead body online.

The 21-year-old went missing on October 24, last year, whilst travelling to the tourist island of Koh Rong, but sadly seven days later her body was found 62 miles off the coast near the Thai border.

Amelia was last seen at a party back in October last year but her body was found a week later in waters close to the Thai border

Her brother Harry, who lives and works in LA, has spoken of his grief at having found images of her body uploaded onto Instagram before he had been able to identify her.

He is now warning others about the hidden dangers of travelling and says that they may never know what really happened on the night of her disappearance.

The 28-year-old from Worthing, West Sussex, told the Sun Online: "She was the more sensible one of the family, I think that's why it makes it more shocking.

Its quite normal in asia for peole to video accidents and murders, without even attempting to help the victims. i saw a guy in an upside down 4x4 in Thailand and people stopped and took videos and drove off. WHen I asked wht was going on i was toldthat if you tried to help you could wind up being responsible for the victims care, and if you were in another vehicle that was involved it maybe taken as evidence of guilt that you stopped to help. No idea how true that is but if you have been here long enough and seen a few accidents you will have seen how it works. Was not that long ago the videos were shown on the news in the evening but that seems to have stopped now

New UK evidence of ‘date-rape’ drug may reopen case of drowned British backpacker

New toxicology reports carried out in the United Kingdom have revealed that Amelia Bambridge, a British backpacker who died while on Koh Rong Island in 2019, had the date-rape drug GHB in her system at the time of her death as well as the party drugs MDMA and MDA.

Bambrdige was only 21-years-old when she passed. Her body was found floating about 96 kilometres from the island in the Gulf of Thailand, according to the Daily Mirror.

The findings prompted Bambdrige’s family to question Cambodian police’s decision to classify the incident as a drowning. Now, the family suspects foul play was involved and maintains that Bambridge wouldn’t take drugs willingly.

According to the Daily Mirror article, Bambridge’s mother has asked for the case to be reopened.
