Thai Air to Shut Down Flights to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar.

THAI to cancel 6 routes to 4 Asean countries

Sumeth Damrongchaitham, President of Thai Airways International (THAI), said on Monday that THAI is looking into the shutting down of six flight routes to 4 Indochinese countries, namely Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

These routes, which all emanate from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, are to Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Yangon.

“These routes are all covered by a small number of flights and have low customer capacity,” he said. “Once the cancellation plan is finalised, THAI will assign Thai Smile Airways to cover these routes instead.”

Sumeth further explained that competition had become fiercer, with every airline dropping prices to stay ahead of its rivals. “THAI needs to adjust our strategies too to preserve our reservation rate. We will focus on rolling out promotional campaigns until year end.”

Well it's got my vote if it's replaced by Smile Airways as stated (and not PC Airways - see below)

We can check the view:-

Thai Airways

Smile Airways

And the PC Airway Ladyboy Air Hostxxxxx (Can't bring myself to type the word but under Thai law, "kathoey" must be listed as male on their passports )

I can't say I agree with the comment about the cabin crew (but thanks for the nice photos). On the main point of the story, THAI have not been competing on price and those that are happy to pay more prefer Bangkok Airways. And Lanmei and JC have taken the Chinese tour group custom.

In the article the President of THAI said:
These routes are all covered by a small number of flights (not true - PNH is twice daily for example) and have low customer capacity,” he said. “Once the cancellation plan is finalised, THAI will assign Thai Smile Airways to cover these routes instead.”

Sumeth further explained that competition had become fiercer, with every airline dropping prices to stay ahead of its rivals (not every, THAI did not). “THAI needs to adjust our strategies too to preserve our reservation rate. We will focus on rolling out promotional campaigns until year end.” (This is what he just said is the problem but now it becomes the solution, albeit temporarily))

“However, next year’s strategy remains to be seen. Our prices this year have been reduced to a record low (not true on the PNH or any route afaik) and if this strategy doesn’t work, we may take a different direction, such as seeking more partners for organisation tickets (sorry the Chinese airlines already have this sown up) , increasing online channels (i.e. cutting out the travel agents but once you drive people online, they will cease to be suckered into paying the higher fares that the travel agents get away with charging, or giving privileges to frequent fliers (how will that increase revenues?) ,” he added.

Yeah, sounds like a plan. Next item on the agenda?

This BP story is more focused on a complete shutdown, (THAI) is not at risk of shutting down and recent news reports about the airline's situation were "misinterpreted", THAI president Sumeth Damrongchaitham insisted on Wednesday.

It's never true until they deny it!

Not a good week for THAI, they also had an uncontained engine failure on take-off at BKK.

Quite true - one can never sort out the truth - but suspicions arose when I saw they had a newly commissioned building on the airport for their fleet.

Looked like downsizing to me..

Thai Airways chairman resigns as company struggles
ByThe Associated Press

BANGKOK — Nov 2, 2019, 5:08 AM ET
Thai Airways has disclosed that its chairman has resigned as the carrier struggles with financial challenges.
The airline said Friday that Ekniti Nitithanprapas resigned as of Nov. 1.

The carrier's vice chairman, Air Chief Marshal Chaiyapruk Didyasarin, will be acting chairman.

Thai Airways gave no reason for Ekniti's departure after three of the airline's executive directors recently quit. The company's president recent drew criticism for saying the company was in crisis and might have to close if its employees do not cooperate with a rehabilitation plan.

The company reported a nearly 6.7 billion baht ($220 million) net loss in the April-June quarter. It said a slowdown in tourism in Thailand and in the global aviation market were factors behind a 10% decline in revenue from a year earlier. Passenger traffic fell more than 5%.

The airline has been selling decommissioned aircraft to help alleviate its cash crunch.
