Cambodia is now officially one of Southeast Asia’s most expensive countries for expats.

Breaking news from Cambodia can be found here. CEO often finds Khmer news and translates it into English for our readers if it is interesting to expats, locals, Cambodians living abroad and anyone who wants to stay informed of the latest local and international news stories about Cambodia and our neighbors in South East Asia. There are many sources for Khmer news articles and they can all be found here in one place. Most of the media comes out of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville, but we cover national Cambodian news from all provinces.

I make my own yogurt... Buy milk when it's 50% off and make 5 kilo of yogurt from 10 liters of milk (I strain it so it's thick yogurt)
Yeah, did that too, until I ended up with a serious infection of the intestines. Then I quit.

^^what a shock, imported dairy products are expensive in a country with no dairy industry.
No, not the fact it's more expensive is the shock, but the fact it's over triple the price, which is much more than you'd expect for the added cost of transport and taxes.

The same yogurt can be bought in Thailand for half. Some stuff is simply crazy expensive in Cambodia, and these are just two examples.

I simply can't wait for 7-11 to come to Cambodia and prices for some stuff will 'normalize', or at least normalize to Thai standards. Cambodia used to be cheaper than the surrounding countries, or at least it used to be so where I live, but over the last years the tables have turned and the only stuff still cheap is beer and spirits (not wine), fuel and cigarettes. And some meds (strange since those are imported as well....)

Many of those drugs are knockoffs imported from India, Pakistan etc. Can't complain tho, I never had a bad batch.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I may be utilitarian in outlook, but my rent is $180 for a 3 storey shop house.

My wife cooks whatever I like - even macaroni cheese with sausage and bacon bits.

She fills my wallet with my daily allowance for gasoline, coffee and beers.

If I save my allowance over 3 days and stick to 4 beers a day, I can get hammered with my friends and female company with a tower - 6$ with buy one get one free and a 5$ tip to the lady.

Where else in the world can that happen?

Dairy is expensive - sure... but it's a relatively minor point compared to the lifestyle you can have on a small amount of money.

My wife is saving for our own house - there was a small house available overlooking the sea 40k, but we have not got enough just yet, as she can't get a mortgage because she cannot read or write and has no provable income except mine.

There are and always will be bargains for resourceful people.

I regularly check if there are better places to live but Cambodia is always top of the list, once all factors pertaining to my outlook on life are taken into consideration.

I don't really like Nanny States, so Cambodia is good for me.

LOL:
been saying that for years :beer3:
Since Poi Pet now has a Big C,hopefully they will expand around the country

BUT still as most of the goods will come from Thailand and Vietnam, so it still wont be cheaper ...

True. Western meds are about the same price as back home, only difference is you buy them over the counter so I save on prescription fees.

It's especially weird that some are fixated on dairy products given that this particular industry is fairly well subsidized in almost every western country.

Don't count on 7-11 making much of a difference. They are all over the PI and in general are 5-10% more than the other mini markets. Have only tried one in VN and it seems to be the same. I suspect the Cambodian version will follow suit. For whatever reason the Thai version is pretty damn good.
