Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Online Gambling Ban in Cambodia a Problem for Philippines

Post by Adam Xie »

The Cambodian Daily

For the most part, the neighbouring countries of Cambodia and the Philippines have little issue with one another. However, a blanket ban on online gambling in the former is already having a negative effect on the Philippines.

Of course i want Cambodia to close down the whole online gambling "industry" here.
But hopefully that is because it is HE/Cambodia's decision.
Similarly I hope Philippines make the decision that suits itself best.

It is up to China to effectively regulate the behaviour of its gambling problem.
If it needs help, persuasion not intimidation would be more appropriate way to deal with its near neighbours.

(but the fool is me, sitting here in the middle of the night, suggesting to China that it learns good manners)

If China is serious about enforcing their no gambling laws for their citizens then maybe they should just stop them from travelling overseas and place internet blocks just like they have with google to online gambling sites. =@

Prohibition rarely works.

The figures are a bit vague here, but 1,000 Chinese deported from Cambodia this year for internet crime seems a realistic figure judging from news reports:

Chinese, Cambodian police nab about 1,000 gambling, fraud suspects
(Xinhua) 17:29, September 21, 2019

BEIJING, Sept. 21 -- Nearly 1,000 suspects have been apprehended by Chinese and Cambodian police in a joint crackdown on online gambling, telecommunication fraud and gang crimes this year, said the Ministry of Public Security.

By Aug. 30, 335 Chinese suspected of online gambling crime and 155 suspects of telecommunication fraud have been captured in Cambodia, said the ministry.

A large number of dens of online gambling and telecommunication fraud crimes have been busted, it said.

China and Cambodia launched the year of law enforcement cooperation in March, aiming to jointly combat major crimes such as illegal online gambling, telecommunication fraud, drug and gang crimes to safeguard the security and social stability of the two countries.

Which country will be next ?

Taiwan moves to close igaming legal loophole
20 September 2019

The Taiwanese Ministry of Justice has proposed an amendment to its legal code that would criminalise online gambling, which it describes as the cause of "social and family problems" in the country.

According to the ministry, the amendment to Articles 266 and 270 of Taiwan's Criminal Code will, “add criminal liability for gambling with use of telecommunications equipment, electronic communications, the internet or other similar means".

This, in turn, will also see new penalties introduced, including a NT$1,000 (£25.9/€29.3/$32.3) fine for anyone found to be gambling online, with any equipment used to do so to be confiscated.

While gambling “in a public place, or a place open to the public” has been against the law in Taiwan since 1994, as has operating gambling facilities, there are currently no laws in place in the country relating to online gambling, something the Ministry described as a “loophole.”

It said that as a result of widespread use of technology and the internet, any indivdual with the right equipment could easily access gambling - something it said had a negative impact on Taiwanese society, leading to a growing prevalence on gambling addiction.
