A Gaping Hole Opens on Koh Kong National Road

Cambodia Breaking News (Koh Kong): On September 17, 2019, the national road 48 collapsed, leaving a big hole in the middle of the road at Kilometer no.42, Bomtum Sakor district, Koh Kong.

The authorities are checking the cause of the road collapse. There are a lot of big trucks allowed to drive on that road. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident.

Sinkholes are common in limestone country and usually impossible to repair by filling in.

The underground water keeps carving the hole out bigger all the time

I just checked, It is near, but not exactly at, the place where "the corridor" crosses #48 - so the hole was not made by an elephant falling thru'. ( contrary to appearances)

Geological map indicated Young Alluvium - that figures, as it is on the immediate flood plain of the Preak Piphot (river).

It looks to me to be at the eastern approach of the bridge at Andong Touk. (town) If not, it is over a culvert of some kind.
The foundations appear to have been washed away.

Not surprising - this road was a very very difficult job - the rainfall, the run-off from the Cardamoms, the alluvial soil and soft sandstone.
A nightmare to build, cost a fortune, but was still very shoddily built in places. (Thai built) 10 years on and in many places it is literally falling apart.
The overloaded trucks do the damage.

I dream of the day Koh Kong is inaccessible by road once again...
Those days were heaven.

I traveled that road many time as it was being built and always wondered what had happened to all the knowledge man had gained since the Romans built their roads.
This road is nothing but a bulldozed track with a layer of icing placed on the top as soon as the mud solidified and is now only held in place by a group of pothole holding hands.

I'm so pissed off with having lost all my videos and pics of those early days of barge river crossings and construction of that road before the bridges were built.

Before that early road building, and at least that muddy all weather access in your photos,
i ALWays caught the boat.
For twenty bucks, sitting on the roof of those torpedo coffin boats was the best value tour in cambodia. 4-5 hours along the coast, in between the reefs and through the islands. Fabulous.
The road put the ferries out of business.

I gotta say those early road trips, through the fresh-cut jungle, was quite spectacular though.
